Merlin Posted April 19, 2007 Report Posted April 19, 2007 Hey all, I just installed a adj timing plate and set it at +4. I took it for a ride and the bottom half of the throttle sputters and backfires. Once it open up it works great. Any suggestions? BTW before I advanced the timing it worked very well, with no hesistation. Do I have to re-jet or should I just advance it 1, 2 or 3 degrees? Thanks Quote
fox_forma Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 I would try backing off the time a degree and see if it evens out, keep doing it to see where it works best at. How much compression you at? Quote

fox_forma Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 I dont believe you need to rejet when doing the timing mod but maybe because it is a low end mod you need more fuel there for some reason. Have you tried messing with the air screws a little to see what happens as well? Quote

Have you tried messing with the air screws a little to see what happens as well? I put it back to +2 and it didn't run any better. So then I put it back to 0, and still no better. When I went for a ride even near wide open it was backfiring and sputtering. My pipes semed really hot as well. Anyways I then put in a new set of plugs and ran it WOT 1-4, and shut it off. I pulled the plugs and they seemed a little whitish grey on the top? Any help would be great. I was hoping this would be an easy mod and now the bikes works like s@#t. It was running so great. Quote
fox_forma Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 what other mods do you have? Whitish/grey is lean so all i can really tell you is you need to richen up the jetting. Maybe drop the needle one and see. I had an issue like that with my previous shee, although I was running a 2into1 carb set-up. Had nothing down low but would open up in the higher RPM's. Had to drop the needle a notch and it helped out. Maybe try cleaning out your carbs as well. Quote

Thats about it. I don't understand why changing the timing would make it that diferent after it has been running great. Also, after putting it back to 0 degrees and it didn't change has me stumped. Could the pick up be too far away or too close cause that sem to be a little adjustable? Any help would be great. Should I turn the air scews in some to see if that makes it run a little richer? Screaming Yellow Zonker Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 if it ran good before I would pull your jets out and make sure they didnt pick anything up. I have had that happen to me while I was away. It ran fine then all the sudden it would spit and sputter. I checked the plugs and they were bright white. so I started moving the needles up and it slowly got better. but after tearing the carbs apart I found I sucked some debris into a jet. Just some info from my experience. Quote
okbeast Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 Well since the only thing you changed is the timing plate I would start there. Did you put on a new stator? Did you change the pick-up gap? Are any wires pinched or rubbing on something? I wouldn't automatically start messing with other things until you check all the electrical stuff involved with the stator/timing plate and all since that is all that you changed. Quote

I didn't put on a new stator?Shoudl I? As for the pickup, I really didn't check exactly where it was I just assumed it would bolt back on the plate. What should the gap be? As for the wires I checked those and they seem to be fine. Thanks for the replies Keep helping and making suggestions. Quote

Merlin Posted April 20, 2007 Author Report Posted April 20, 2007 here is for the air gap http://www.rickystator.com/05technical/01i...aha/RS000BP.pdf I believe that mine is much further than that, after looking at it from last night. I wold almost guess close to 1 cm. Would that be the culprit? Quote
cam2 Posted April 20, 2007 Report Posted April 20, 2007 it's hard to see from the pic in the link, but make sure you rotate the flywheel and set the gap between the two raised tabs on the flywheel and the pickup coil. Quote
