wrecker03 Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 Well I'm rebuilding the top end. Wasn't expecting to but my compression was low, just under 90psi, pulled the head and found a couple gouges in the left cylinder wall and the dome over the left cylinder has some pits in it. I think the guy I bought it from did some damage and didn't want to put the money up to do it right, just wanted it to run to sell, anyway I figure I might as well just do it. My question is since I'm doing some top end work what's your opinion on what I should do as far as mods. I'm thinking I'll be around .030 over when I'm done, I hope because he gave me a set of .030 over Weisco pistons. I'm running pretty much stock right now with the exception of Toomey T5's. The other thing is he was running the stock airbox when I got it but the Toomey's melted it on both sides so should I pick up a stock airbox or run the open Toomey foam filter system he gave me with the bike? letsgetthisdone Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 Run the open toomey filter system. You'll prolly have to go up 2-3 sizes on the main. You just have to avoid large puddles, but its well worth the boost in power it provides IMO. Quote

Also, if you are looking for better performance, have some portwork and headwork done while you have the top end apart. Quote
dajogejr Posted March 7, 2007 Report Posted March 7, 2007 Welcome to the addiction friend. To start with, do you have a budget to work from. I agree...if you're gonna go for some go fast goodies, with the cylinders off, now is the time. After pipes, porting is the biggest single improvement you can make. From woods and trails to flat out drag race porting...it can be done. If he gave you some .030 over pistons, I'd give the jugs and pistons to a machine shop or builder to make sure they can be used...and fitted properly. You can do things cheaply for a little performance...or open up the wallet and get your self a rocket!! Quote
wrecker03 Posted March 7, 2007 Author Report Posted March 7, 2007 Welcome to the addiction friend. To start with, do you have a budget to work from. Well I'm not rich and I'm not looking to make this a money pit LOL :yelrotflmao: This is just a toy and like anyone when the opportunity presents itself I don't mind digging into the wallet. My plan is to tear it down next winter and start making it nice. It's a little rough around the edges right now but I'll be riding Silver Lake Dunes and some trails this summer so since I'm rebuilding I figure I might as well give her a boost. I'm actually looking right now for a reputable machine shop around here that will tell me the truth about whether I can use the pistons or not. I can take some measurements to get at least an idea but I really don't know how deep they're going to have to take it. Quote

If you want to stay local, I believe there are several good performance shops in MI. If I remember correctly, Grand River Racing is in MI. Quote
DIRTMAN350 Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 If ya got some extra $ laying around hit up noss and get yourself a noss head. He can hook ya up. Dave is a awesome guy with nothing but good products and service. Quote

A&S, Grand River and RDZ are all in MI. But because they're top names, they often have top waiting time...etc. Tell you what....do this. PM machwon on here. His name is Bob, and he's R&B racing..he's just outside of Saginaw. real nice guy, honest, and does pretty good work real, REAL cheap. I rode a bike he ported at Silver Lake last year (davem06's bike) and I was impresses with how well it run. now...did Dave have a dragster, no...not by any means. But he had a respectable bike that was fun to ride, and he got the work done very, very cheap. Hit Bob up...see what he says....and good luck. I know in your PM you said you were close to me...but, Frasier? shit...we're neighbors, I'm in St. Clair Shores.... Quote

That's good to know. When I have a breakdown your close enough to stop by and share a pop or two to get me through the rough times  Quote
badassbanshee479 Posted March 8, 2007 Report Posted March 8, 2007 Well if ya have it apart you can have it ported, mill the stock head to raise the compression, or run a cool head, get a timing plate, reeds are a good add on. the list goes on and on! Quote
