My son is turning 4 on march 31st and I was thinking on getting him a little 50cc for his birthday. He loves the idea but the wife thinks Im crazy. He has had powerwheels since he was two and can move those things though some tight turns at full speed. What do you guys think is the right age, is four good or is the wife right?

I bought my son a Honda TRX 70 fourwheeler for his third birthday. I could stick it in first or second and let him rip around the yard and still be able run him down if something was wrong. Last year I bought him a KFX 80 for his sixth birthday and now he is fearless. F.A.S.T. Jeffs son has an LT80 that is insanely fast and he is seven. He has been riding that bike for several years now. Just dont buy one of those knockoff pieces of shit for $250. You will regret it.

looks like mini ellison has been watching dad too much

and ive heard from a few people not to buy the knockoff crap. Ive been looking at the little polaris 50 and suzuki has a nice little quad also. We have a guy here locally who does machine work on atvs so when he gets the hang of thing we can do a little motor work if need be.

Definatly. They are never to young to learn and starting them off at that age is almost guarenteing a first place spot in a pro class whatever style race he chooses. Tell your wife there is a throttle limiter so you can jog along side the bike to make sure he learns where he breaks and gas are. I know women dont respond well to things like this heh, but she will be happy your jogging and getting in shape

50cc is the perfect starter bike. Quads are like shoes when they are young though they out grow them so fast.

I started my son out when he was still crawling by putting him on in front of me and taking him real slow for short rides. I felt that would get him to where he wouldn't be afraid of the noise or the bike. And it definatly worked. When he was 4 I took him down to Little Sahara for his birthday and he scared the crap out of me. He liked setting on the gas tank and holding on to the handle bars. I took him up every dune down there and he would pull himself up to see over the tops of the dunes as we crested them. Luckily his mom was back at camp or she would have killed me. When we came back I bought him one of those 107cc jap knockoff bikes and he scared me on it because it was so narrow I was affraid he was going to get hurt. So now he is 5 and has been riding a polaris predator 90. That was the best money I have ever spent. Now he wants a dirtbike. My wife is going to kill me.

My brother and I started riding when we were 4-5 on a 1983 Suzuki 185. I think that would be the best gift you could get your son is an ATV. Ive heard the polaris 90 is a good kids bike!

Lol same here, except mine was a 125. Just recently sold it, rode the hell out of that thing for years, starts first pull to this day...

Supervised riding on a small and/or appropriately performance-restricted machine would be fine.

My mom used to get upset just knowing dad took me riding in the woods. I think you have to do some rough/crazy/stupid "boy things" together that mom doesn't like (and maybe doesn't know about) or it just isn't fun. I think it is called cutting the apron strings. An overly protective parent can damage a child too.

If it were me/mine I would look at the Suzuki LT80 because it has some "growing room features".

Search around here. There was someone asking this question a while back and it got at least as much feedback.

That is how I started with my son to. I used to take him for rides all around my neighborhood. I was in the same boat as you are with the dirtbike thing. I had bought him a Yamaha PW50 project that I was working on but then I decided that by the time I got it pieced together, I might as well have bought a new bike for him. Soooo, last July while I was at the St. Anthony dunes I went to Rexburg Motorsports and bought a new Yamaha TTR50 four stroke dirtbike for him. I suprised him and my wife when I showed at home from my vacation and I had a new dirtbike for our son. He has wrecked it a few times but he has never gotten hurt. Make sure you teach your kids to wear their protective gear!

Id say so. or the equally sized yami. both are perfect for a 4 year old, and will carry a fully grown adult to..
