It really depends on what your doing w/ it...If your riding mx, trail, technical, the ptr's work nice w/ alot of motors. I run them on my 4 mil stroker around Maine and even tried them in Glamis, CA....I liked the Shearer and little better for duning, but not for woods... I just rode a 4mil cub this weekend w/ ptr mids...pulled like a train and works a lot better than CPI's for technical riding....He put his CPI's on though.....hang on. The thing ripped for dragging, but very difficult for riding. As soon as the power came on, the front end was up and that was w/ a +4 swingarm...

I'm glad I saw this....I thought I was gonna have to pull my Fattys, dump 'em, then get a set of T5s. :pirate:

If Banchetta is correct....

I'd probably stick with what I have.... :thanks:

 

Would the change be worth the time/effort?

Banchetta is dead on. IMO, fatties are one of THE best pipes for the money. They pull and work great on a stock motor, rev out good and still provide goot torque. However, the more you do to the motor, the better they perform. They are one of those pipes that rewards you as you mod. I would not dump them for T5's, I personally don't like T5's and would rather have the Fatties over the T5's, but if money's not an issue, go with some PT Highs!!

can you like buy the head pipes seperate?

would a pualturner head pipe work with the silencer of a pro-circut 916?

Save your money. If you were thinking of CPI, Shearer or Rocket, then I'd say yes there will be a big difference like I said on the cubs...But when you go to a more higher revving pipe, you lose the low rpm power and make the shee into a more light switch powerband....which enhances w/ porting..Going from fatties to T5's. Don't bother. There isn't enough difference to talk about. Where you gain on one end, you'll lose on another....

I have some views that I FEEL are different with these stated power ranges. No manufacturer makes an all around pipe. They may make a pipe that feels like it makes more power everywhere than stock pipes, but nothing all around. This is what I know of these pipes from dyno testing and having them or ridden bikes with them.

 

FMF - Fatty ~ early Mid- early high> (best suited for a stock/semi stock motor)

FMF - SST ~ Mid-High > (best suited motor built for high end power)

FMF - Gnarly ~ Low-mid > (best suited for a motor built for low end power)

 

Toomey - T6 ~ mid-high> (best suited for a stock/semi stock motor)

Toomey - T5 ~ early mid-low high > (best suited for a ported motor)

 

Paul Turner - High Rev ~ Mid/High > (best suited motor built for high end power)

Paul Turner - Midrange ~ late low- late midrange > (best suited for a semi stock motor)

 

Pro Circuit - Platinum ~ low- late mid> (best suited for a stock/semi stock motor) The best low/mid pipe I have seen.

 

DynoPort - 2 into 1 ~ Low- late mid > (best suited for a motor built for low end power) The 2 into 1 pipes are about the worst low-mid pipes I have ever ridden with. These pipes actually have a spec redline that is higher than the pro circuits.

 

MotoFast - 2 into 1 ~ Low- Late mid > (best suited for a motor built for low end power) This pipe on the old ported 350 we had it on ripped, but its supposed to be close to the dynoport power wise.

i think maybey someone should consolidate/update this thread. maybey including some older pipes that are still being used and traded/sold like the older gold series fmf's. if not too complicated, how some work with different silencers. i may be wrong, but i think i heard that the dmc uses the same headpipes for the allen and the 916's, just different silencers :shrug:

 

maybey we can use this thread to bounce ideas and add info. i just think longer threads are harder to follow sometimes. anyone up to it?

I had t-5's running 4th-6th gear for years on mid-top cylinders A+++.moved into woods riding and the set-up wasn't that great.Ibroke a rod and needed new cylinders and than I went with the fatty's with stock porting.Alot of clutching with the t-5's.I was in the weeds alot.....LOL

i dug this thing up because i think it is a valuble tool for all new guys to get a start at what they are looking for..

 

its not a bible but it is a good ref....

Snop, I've noticed that the SSTs come on sooner, and fall off way before T5s on a stock motor.

 

Do you have anymore input on those 2 pipes? I'm sure you've dynoed them.
