Painting Plastics

anyone have any secrects or tips? im about to paint my plastics and wondering if their is any specail thing i need to do. let me know. =]

Have a couple/few different grades of sandpaper. I only used two..rough and fine(not sure what grit). Go over your plastics lightly with the rough sandpaper if you have deep scratches, etc. If not, start going over them with the fine sand paper, Make sure to USE WATER when doing this, it helps a lot. Go over them until you can hardly see/can't see any more scratches/lines, etc. The sand paper should slide/"fall" right of the plastics. This is when you know you have it smoothed out enough. Once you are satisfied with your sanding, dry the plastics and make sure there is no dust, dirt, etc on them. And start to paint what ever colour you want, use light/thin layers at a time and wait a good minute between each coat. This is how i did mine and they turned out pretty good, Hope this helps :beer:

also make sure you have paint made for plastics not just some regular old spray paint or house paint. they sell special paint for plastics. autozone, walmart etc

Yea i used Krylon and it looks good :thumb:

100 grit, maybe 150 grit but that's pushing it too fine, then for your fine, get 1500 grit

 

 

You sand it with 100 grit, then 1500...make sure to wet the place your sanding when you do the 1500...

 

Then paint it, repeat the sanding process again...

 

do that 3 times and youv'e got a pretty good paint job...

400/600/1200 wet sand inbetween every stage , use slow reducer in the clear aswell as flex agent to allow for slow , chemical curing process.

Wont spray paint crack when the fender flexes?

 

If you use the right kind of spray paint, like Krylon Fusion Plastic. It is made for the plastic and will bend with the plastic. It would probably crack under extreme bending conditions, but i havnt tried to test it :shrug:

Ya, I heard the Krylon Fusion works pretty good, and if it cracks sand the area with 1500 then spray it again............... :beer:

i insulted my buddies spray can krylon and he goes it own break when you flex , he littlery bent his back fender completly vertical , no cracks or chips. I was personally impressed , however it does not look as good as car paint .

After sanding before the first coat wipe the plastic good with laqure thinner.It cleans it well and helps the plastic paint soak in well,...............but it says that right on the can.
