I'm interested in this "large reed" conversion, is this a reed that is readily available like a dirt bike reed or something?, do the jugs have to be modified?

Better yet dose anyone have pics?

any info would be great!

from what i have seen of them on a dyno there was very minimal gains..cant remember if this was on a stock stroke motor or 4mm. im thinking it was a 4mm..1 hp difference..in my opinion not enough of a difference to warrant the 8+ hours they had in modifying the intakes to accept cr125 reeds...and if u had to pay someone to do it, 8 hours of time i gonna cost you a pretty big chunk of change...most people figure about 1 hp per 100 bucks...

i run a big reed conversion.it was done by Ed Toomey [now retired] and Ross Baron Racing [out of business since around 2000] back in 1997.i run cr125 reeds in my jugs and yes it was a high cost mod back then .not sure who all does it now a days.andy at grand river does a conversion yet i think but not sure.it took him around 24 hours work time to do the cylinder work and 5 hours of work on the head mod.as for hp and torque gains,it was set up with a stock crank that was trued and welded,34pj's,t5 pipes and stock ignition with an adjustable timing plate.it put out 75 hp and 48 ft lbs of torque.it runs a quite bit different than a regular shee drag engine.it is a very smooth power.it comes on smooth off the line and continuously makes power.i must however run race fuel with 108 octane or higher or alky because it will only run on one cylinder if i don't. could never figure out why it drops the one cylinder on pump gas.i have raced many 4 mil strokers at the drags both small and big bore and have beaten more of them than not.i can almost gaurentee you won't find anyone who will do a big reed conversion to match the quality of craftsmanship that toomey put into his conversions.few people have seen a big reed conversion and fewer have seen one run.i can honestly say anyone who has ran against me with a stroker motor or any shee motor has been very impressed.do a search and type in big reed conversion and there is some pics of my cylinders on here.

I work as a machinist in an engine machine shop so the labor would be my own, now that I know its a cr125 reed cage I can map out the procedure.

I was curious because it seems to be a common upgrade on the RZ350's which is the powerplant I'm swapin in the shee this winter, the spec 2 guys have lots of good things to say abuot the conversion just wanted to see if anone around here had it done.

Thanks for the info, I'll look for the pics.

Thanx

if and when you decide to try to do a big reed conversion, keep me updated if you will.if you have any more questions i will try to answer them if i can.i have to be honest and say that i believe that there is no one that is going to do a big reed conversion that comes any where close to matching ed toomeys.

spend the same on cub cyl's are you silly??, I am a machinist the labor is my own, or FREE if you will, gettin some cages off ebay for around 5.00 ea., so I still don't see the cost benifit on the cubs, besides I'm not building a dragster, and I'm not after peak hp, like bluebanshee said it makes power smooth from the bottom up, its not how much power it makes but how it makes it!

I will keep you updated, I'm gonna try the conversion on my old banshee jugs first befor messin with the RZ, and wait tell you see the craftsmanship I think you will likey!

Coulden't find the pics you think you could post them again or email 'em to my?, that would be champ!!!

that wasnt very nice... :(

i agree that was'nt very nice.b knows how hard it is to beat pops and the big reeds.so does anyone who run against me.if i really feel like racing and not playing around ,they can't beat me.when the new season arrives,be prepared to get beat by the old man son.you and brad are gonna need those 10 or 12 or what ever you are going to build.lmao :rotflmao::rotflmao::rotflmao::rotflmao:

as for the "4 times the performance out of cheetah or cubs "comment,i don't think so.a big cheetah can beat me, but not easily.i'd love to run against some cubs with stock or stroker don't matter and i bet they wont be beating me easily either.

that'll be cool.i'll be lookin forward to seeing you at the races.where you from?i'm planning on goin to a drag at marion center on 10-22-05 weather permitting.you need to try to go to quad fest 2006 next year.mghty3whlr will be there hopefully with his impressive little 250 zuki.

im eventually going to build a rz motor for my race chassis ( which means the frame and suspension can take extra power ) would the cub stroker be better than a cheeta powervalve ? im going to ride this (fast!!!) on the canyons and track but it cant all be top end. what do you reccommend ? im speaking of an rz street bike

if u wanna ride it on a track i would stay far away from cheetah or cub motors...they are strictly drag setups with litte to nothing on the bottom end..

I don't know about the cubs but I gota disagree on the Cheetahs with power valves. I have a 485 power valve Cheetah and it pulls evreywhere from bottom to top. It is so easy to ride I can't believe it. A buddy of mine has full drag ported stock cyl's and it is all top with nothing below the narrow power band. Mine has all the top end power but also all the mid and bottom as well. If you've never rode a machine with power valves you don't know what you're missing , and once you add in the head, pistons, intakes, V-Force reeds, that come with... the price doesn't hurt so much either.

So I would have to say... Go power valve.... :headbang:

I couldn't agree more, the Cubs are strictly top-end monsters and definately not suitable for a RZ streetbike/racebike. Pipes that are currently available for RZ's will make this even worse. Highly modified RZ cylinders will make more power than you would EVER need in a streetbike application while still maintaining decent bottom end power, and a broad power curve....Jim

p.s. you better plan on extended swing arm, steering stabilizer and a damn good suspension on that RZ. My stock framed RD with mild porting, 34 Keihins, Electronic ignition, and a set of Moto-Carerra chambers is absolutely un-steerable on the gas
