clutch adjustment

ive been out in the garage for at least 3 hours total and still cant get it ive had it apart and back together about 10 times now ! before my clutch wouldnt grip in the top end it would just rev. how do you perform a clutch adjustment? i followed the clymer manual clutch adjustment thing and it didnt work? if i put it in 1st and kick it, it moves like normal but if i pull the lever in it moves still. can someone explain to me how to do the adjustment?

 

any help at all would be appreciated

There is a nut / phillips screw in the center of the pressure plate. You will want to adjust that to tighten up / loosen your clutch. You want to get the arrow on the case lined up as close as possible with the "lever" the cable is attached to, and then adjust your clutch at the perch to fine tune it where it needs to be. Honestly, I don't really know how to explain it better than the clymers manual can....is there any particular part of it you're not having luck with? Clutch adjustment isn't very hard when you already have the clutch cover off.

 

I also remember the manual saying that if you cannot get it in adjustment, you're probably in need of a new clutch and / or cable.

i do get it lined up with that and it still wont work but i dont need a new clutch cause i cant get it to grip or slip but not at the same time. i put the phillips screw all the way and and went like quarter turns all the way out and it idk why i but i still cant get it. thanks for any help

Take all the tension off at the perch first

Us your left hand to apply pressure on the arrow at the case while your adjusting with the screw,line the arrows up then put the proper tension on at the perch,

Where is the pressure plate? Do you take off the clutch cover or the whole side case cover on that side? I have a 2004 and when I take off the round clutch cover, there is nothing there!!! Anybody have that problem with that year or newer! How do I adjust my clutch???

you have to take the clutch side case off to get to the clutch (if you have a stock case). you can buy a modified case that has the quick change cover so you dont have to pull the whole side off.

had the same problem when i first attempted it.

Yes u have to take the whole clutch cover off (who asked that question?) and once u get it off ... when ur lookin at ur clutch assembly u will see 1st the Pressure plate. then it will go ... Fiber disk, steel clutch plate, fiber disk, steel clutch plate etc... untill u end up at the end... the last plate should be a FIBER disk all inside ur clutch basket.

Ok for adjustment -

First - adjust ur cable on the perch in till theres about 2 or 3 threads left. 2nd - the adjustment on the pressure plate, theres a 12mm jam nut to lock the push rod (loosen it just a bit) 3rd - there will be a Philips screw head slot at the end of that push rod for adjustment where u loosend the 12mm jam nut off. 4th - hold ur perch in and adjust ur pressure plate in with a philips screw driver on the push rod. once u feel tension on ur perch adjust it (when u have ur perch pulled in right to the handle bar) get it close to the arrow on the case and then tighten up the jam nut. try it a few times pullin it in & letting it out ... (you perch should pull in about 1/2 way before u start to engage the clutch) and fully pulled in, the arrows should line up (arrow on ur case & arrow where the end of the clutch cable attaches).you might have to do some fine tuning with ur cable adjustment on ur perch and ur perch should have free play in it. DO NOT adjust ur cable up tight thats just like holding ur clutch on or 1/2 on ... belive me i did it and it slipped like a bastard & i wore a clutch out in no time.

One more question. Do I have to drain the coolant in order to pull off the side case. I know the water pump is right there too. Can I just leave it or do I have to drain it and take off the pump??? Almost there thanks guys!

yes .. it will drain out when ya pull the side cover off cause theres an inlet tube going into the case up into the head. or u can pull ur rad hose off where it goes into the side cover and drain it so it doesn't go down into the trany even tho all ur oil will come out with it to i ususally just put a bucket under it and take the side cover off. tip the bike up a bit on its side to to get all the coolant out.

that round cover is just for looks, you have to take the side cover off.

i got a brand new clutch and and when i start it and shift to first i have to rev the engine or else it will stall out. but once in first with the clutch helled it wont move and will idle ok but when i rev the engine with the clutch pulled shee moves forward. i tryed fine adjusting it but it doesnt seem to catch all the way when on the gas like that so ive just kept it how it is.....
