it started out to a rocky start

i lined up with a few drag raptors, yzf's 450r's and a few banshees. they were all running snow tires on very loose dirt

i got spanked every damn time

but then i went back to another spot that day where there was harder dirt and realized i was holding on to one gear way to long, so i was shifting faster and at a lower rpm and the difference was like night and day, i waxed a few banshee's and a 450 with snow tires and didn't lose again the rest of the day so that felt good

then i was talking with a couple of other banshee riders and they told me i had way too much air in my tires (14psi) so i lowered it down to about 4.5psi which made the tires much more flat. then i went to kick her over, i pulled back the clutch and BAM my clutch cable popped soooo i had to be towed back to the truck

but all in all i learned alot about my banshee and i can't wait to go again this weekend and do it all over again. riding a banshee the right way takes alot more effort and is completely different from the 4 pokes i've always rode. i love it!!

btw is shifting w/o the clutch a really bad idea because i rebuilt the bottom end and the gears look like they stay constantly meshed just the shift fork that moves? so it really doesn't seem like a bad idea

also another question. should i start off in second? or is that just a mx thing?

if you can pull a second gear holeshot without it bogging go for it.i launch in second from time to time it depends on track condition.

second gear is a good gear to start in. shifting without the clutch wont hurt anything but you have to let off the gas to do that, you will be faster if you do this.

start the race as normal and hold the gas wide open constantly, never let off the gas until you finish. to shift, keep pressure on the shifter and just tap the clutch for a split second when you are ready to shift. it will slide into the next gear and you never had to let off the throttle. it sounds like a lot to do, but once you do it a couple times it will be second nature and you'll be doing it all the time.

Yeah I shift that way too!! Never really thought about it though... I just shift so fast, it just kinda came naturally to me and I barely have to put any pressure at all on the clutch at all! Nice and smooth!! No grinding or anything!! If the cable is adjusted correctly, it only takes a very light pull on the clutch for it to go into the next gear. I've never raced before... only against myself :P so we'll see how I do when I put up with the 4-pokes at the dunes! B)

The Ideal Holeshot RPM is a little higher if you start in second than first, but it's not hard to figure out. I read in a review once that first gear was basically to you could poke around on some rocky hill climbing type stuff (like "utility" ATV's). But Who "POKES" on a Shee anyway!?!? :yank:
