i was wondering. you guys say the stock air filter sux. is it better to get the k&n or a good foam filter? k&n dont make foam filters right?

 

i dont wanna have to buy a $40 filter all the time when it gets dirt on it. because i dont think you can clean thoses right?

Ihave K&N's on all my bike with no problems, just run a outwears and you should have no problems.

I have used both and here's what I think. FOAM. Now it also depends on your riding.

 

I had a k&n with an outerwear. Never had any real problems with it but when I would splash water with an open airbox I'd have trouble. Use to tick me off. Even some people at coalfest (rainfest) had problems with k&n's in the airboxes. They absorb water. They aren't to bad to clean but not as easy at foam. I didn't notice enough increase in airflow to say it's better than a foam either.

 

Now, I used a foam at coalfest with an open airbox and had a blast. I was going through tons of water. A couple times I got it way to wet. I just squished the water out of it and kept riding. The sticky spary you can put on them is great. I will always use foam from now on.

that is very tru about the K&N's...even tho I cant say for the foam. My K&N is is completely exposed to the elements and suks tons of water when it gets wet. (which is why I dont go thru water fast) I would love it if foam stops the water better.

 

I have however read that Foam stops finner particles than K&N's....

 

But even after all that info....I still run a K&N....clean it after every ride...and I have never had any kind of dirt or sand in my boots.

No K&N doesnt make a foam filter, and yes you can clean both the K&N's and the Foams.

 

Both are real easy. But the trick is to keep um clean.

i run a K&N with a outerwear and i like it, but i dont go mud bogging!, if you are in sand, i'd go for the K&N, but from what im reading hear, i might wanna switch to a foamie

Basically, if your running sand, and never hitting water, run a k&N.

 

For everything else, run a foam. I've come home from up in the coal with the blaster I used to have with a k&N and its got a long intake tract and you can see coal dust in it every time. I switched to a foam and never had it in my intake tract again.

 

If you take a baby powder bottle, and hold it up to your k&n and squeeze, the baby powder will go through, it wont with a foam.

 

I ride real harsh conditions and my foam filter has never failed me once, and its seen some nasty swampy mud, waterholes that were deeper than the top of my airbox, and I've only had it burble on me once, but it never died. I run through rivers doing donuts and have never had it fail, even going up a river when it was pretty high and catching a little buoyancy at times. It's fun when its hot out and you get a good creek crossing, you can hit it in 3rd and have a wave come up over you and soak you to cool down, and it cleans the shee up pretty good as well.

 

My pro flo just repels water off of it, and I cut off the very bottom of the rubber catch piece at the bottom of the airbox so water would flow out easily. I ditched the airbox lid the day I bought it, and havent looked back since. I'll never run anything else unless I move out west to play in glamis.
