Tossed my chain yesterday... 3rd gear wide open throttle...

Question is why did it happen?

I was jumping it just before and after it was tossed... I noticed I was missing a Bolt on the Axle carrier... Maybe I snapped it while jumping or when the chain tossed it sheared it (it ripped the metal chain guard right off my case

I wouldn't want to get hit in the leg with a tossed chain, wow they really have power.

Anyways... after I put it back on... i noticed that it's slighty twisted (most likely one link)... I rode it again and it was fine at all speeds... then I tried to push it and once it hit the power band... tossed again... so I stopped riding and

it's a nice DID chain and I don't want to have to replace the whole thing... could I just replace a few links... or better to replace the whole chain.

After the above I lifted the whole rear-end to see the problem and hot it occured... there is a bit of play in the axle with the axle carrier... not much, but if you push up on the left wheel and down on the right it moves slightly (just enough for the brake rotor to touch the pad)...

Other than that... missing the bolt for the axle carrier... any thoughts?

Anything else I should check out?

Don't want to toss it again... especially if i get a new chain.

That thing could rip my leg right off or put a hole through my case. :whoa:

If you need any pics or for me to check anything... please let me know... REALLY need to get this done.

if something is loose in your rear end that will do it. especially if you jump it and land wrong. chains usually jump off when they are too loose, when sprockets are worn, and when something is loose in the rear end. yes you can just replace a few of the links if they are messed up. just run 2 masterlinks. thats what i do anyway.

master links are the links you use to take off the chain (the removable pin ones)?

Also... anything else I should check since tossing it?

How do you know when a chain is worn or sprocket... teeth still "look" good and chain "looks good" (other than the bent link)... maybe I should just take out that one link (it could be tighter I guess).

How would I take out the link though?

How would I put in a new one or join the chain back together?

Also is that play in my axle normal?

I'll try to get some shots of my sprocket in case it is worn or anything.

well with those carrier bolts or bolt missing that rear is gonna move forward and back you need to get that replaced or you will keep losing your chain.......also you can mess up your swingarm if you run with that loose

The axle play sounds like worn axle bearings to me.

Up and down play could be caused by your bearings.

forward/backward play could be loose swingarmbolts.

Do some more feeling and testing, and checkout whats loose.

Tighten everything up, if the freeplay is still there then look into replacing the bearings.

You need a new chain and new sprockets. You need to pick up a repair manual and go over your whole swingarm assembly. The only movement you should have is a nice smooth up and down motion of the swing arm and a nice smooth axial rotiation of the ..um..axle. no wobbling no side to side shimmeys, no play..definetly no loose or missing bolts..that's just poor mechanic abilities and laziness.. You most definetly have worn bearings if you've ran it that long being that loose. You should also make shure all your chain rollers are installed and your chain guides are in good working order. If your sprockets are worn or hooked or cracked or missing teeth they should be replace along with the chain. Sprockets and chains should always be replaced as a set to enshure maximum longevity of your drive train.

I just bought the banshee... so I have no clue. :(

But one of the chain rollers is broken right off... that is visible (the lower one).

What are the chain guides though... where are they?

Sounds like I should just redo the whole system... the chain looks nearly brand new though and is a nice DID 520 gold ERX chain, looks great except for that now bent link. :(

I can just change that link though right... and what are masterlinks... I assume I have to order a link for the exact same chain?

Where is the best place to buy all this?

You need to pick up a repair manual and go over your whole swingarm assembly.

and take in the chain to order your master links, swing arm bolt, roller and bearings.for the swing arm and carrier, redo the back end and be done with it for a wile.

already replaced the rollers... chain actually looks good... anyway to tell if it's alright?

I thought it was bent... but i guess i was wrong... i'll check it again when it's on the bike...

As for the "rear-end" do you just mean the axle bearings?

the swing arm bearings seem good... no play at all.

other than that... should be ok?

meaning if your that worried about tossing the chain again, wile you have the carrier apart for the new bearings pull the swing arm off and check it out.you have a new bike and the best way to learn to work on it is to buy a manual and tear into it.kinda gives you the re assurance of it being "right" and not have to worie about it for a wile.i call it preventive maintnance. and again i cant stress this enough,if this is your first banshee BUY a manual.to tell if a chains bent i lay it on its side coiled up on the floor and check it for any links that dont lay flat.

I would just buy a new chain, next time it comes off you could be looking at alot of trouble if it meshes a gear in your transmission. I would change your oil right now, I bet if you look at what comes out you will have very small metal filings in the oil. I did when mine came off ; i was to cheap to buy a new chain and I ended up cracking my engine casing. Shees have a shitload of torque, I wouldn't trust a bent chain on my bike ;)

I think you have saved me an expensive repair my friend, lol.

but if visually you can't really notice much of a bend when off the bike... it's pretty much fine?

Just put the chain on and jack the rear end up, start the bike and let it idle in second gear. If you notice anything abnormal about the way the chain is running get a new one.

BUT! :whoa:

You have to figure out why a prefectly tight and good working chain came off the sprocket in the first place before you do anything. Its probably the rear bearings, or the swingarm needle bearings, or both. That would make the rear end pitch to the side when you torque on it, throwing the rear end out of alignment and making the rear sprocket crooked, making the chain come off.

Fix the bolt that's missing, and figure out where the play is in the rear end.It doesn't take much.
