OK, I bought my shee used (2001) and it has been running fine. Then one day (last weekend) I go out to start the shee and it wont start. Ok, no big deal, next day I go take a look and I left the air intake covered with platic wrap (I was cleaning and forgot to remove it) Ok, stupid me! I remove the plastic, and the thing still wont start. Ok, needs new plugs then. Put in new plugs and shee starts up. She backfires constantly, and loud too. Ok, no big deal, just need to ride her a bit to clean her out. I go ride for about 30 minutes and come back to shut her off. All right, heres the trouble. I go to start her back up and the engine siezes up! I didnt leave the feul on either. So I get the engine unstuck. She runs ok, but now when I pull in the clutch or put it in neutral, the engine revvs up like a bitch. The plugs foul like mad. Theres a loss of power. WTF! I read the peice about jetting and I dont understand it, but I think the jetting may be off. Heres a list of mods if it will help.

Mikuni carbs

fmf fatty gold series pipes

pro design intake

v force reeds

boost bottle

....I also have shock covers.....could that be the culprit? j/k

Please, if you can help, please do. Thank you.

I reckon you have a serious air leak somewhere, take a good look around all the rubber boots for the carbs, the cross-over tube, choke tube, carb tops etc, shouldn't be too difficult to find.

I hope it wasn't that dip stick I sold you.

Check the boots for an air leak. Back firing is usually a lean condition. How do you check for an air leak??

Pull the choke in and see if the condition goes away or changes any.

Thats the extent of what I know. Go forth and fix your banshee.

Stan, it took me a minute to realize you were joking....I dont know the elevation here, but I live near Nashville. Also, I dont know how to check my jetting......grrrrrrrrr

Start by pulling a plug since it isn't going to run well enough for a plug chop. Check to see if it isn't a nice even tanish color.

If you can, post a picture. Jetting can be a biatch.

Also, after rereading about your engine seizing, I would really check that plug. Also note if there are any aluminum speckles on the electrode.

I'm not a jetting super freak, so if anyone else has something for Poly to try please post it.

You might also want to post this in the jetting forum. I would move it for you, but I'm not a mod for this section.

Oh yeah, oil leaks out the back of the pipes a bit, I use 100% syth. motul 50:1. High octane gas (I think 91, not sure.) Anything else you need to know to help me?

I may be wrong for asking this, but is 50:1 ratio a little to much? Maybe that is the PROBLEM. You want to mix 4oz per gallon.

youve got it backwards. 50:1 is leaner than 4 oz per gallon. because that ratio is 32:1. the higher the left number the less oil in the fuel

You say you siezed it, then I'd do a compression test. Go to a automotive store and get a compression guage. Snap-on or Craftsman are the better ones, but anything is better than nothing. They cost around $25-50....check both sides w/ the throttle wide open...That'll let you know how well the rings are sealing and whether or not you need to rebuild it.... Your saying that its revving out which tells me that you have an air leak like others have mentioned, that will cause your motor to sieze. You have some home work to do. Let us know what you find.

Do you have a Clymers?

Get one and start reading. It tells you how to trouble shoot some stuff and how to take stuff apart. Like your carbs to check your jetting.

YOOOOOOO same thing happnd to me 2 weeks ago dont run it!!!! I started mine a few weeks ago to go ride with my freind with his 250ex so we were riding and it ran great for a few so then it just starts backfiring and the plugs go put new plugs in and stared it back up it runs then bam 1 piston siezes up and run it on 1 cylinder i figured my right pipe was just blocked up so i drive it a bit and it had no powerband at all so i have my freind with the 250ex tow me home, i let it sit unseize it pour oil down the cyliders start it up and it ran great rode it for a while then bang it just shuts off and the back tires lock up and skid to a stop, even tho for 45 minutes it ran great even drag raced it and won in the 45 minutes, i get it home take the motor out take the jugs off and discover one of my pistons just melted to sh#t and even had a hole burt througt it while the other cylider was perfect, all this cuased by a small crack where the boost bottle connects so really check your boots beetween the carb and reeds for cracks it might not be to late to save your pistons and cylinders, my shee is ripped apart right now from such a small crack and now i have a 350 dollar bill to pay when i pick up my jugs and pistons on monday, not to mention the pain in the ass of ripping the whole quad apart and doin all the motor work, so check it out you mightbe able to save it!!!! Too late, if it siezed, you most likely need a rebuild. Chances of not scoring the cylinder after a sieze is very slim to none...at least I've never seen it.

Like Banchetta said, the chances of not scoring your cylinders and/or pistons is very slim. I just seized my motor (wrist pin bearing failure caused it), and the pistons were scored on the carb side. I'd remove your carbs and manifolds and check your pistons for seize marks.
