mavguy Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 hey i got a 1988 Banshee and i lost spark about 4 months ago. I replaced the primary/secondary ignition coil, and it ran, albeit harder to start than usual once it was warmed up (5 hard and fast kicks). However, i did hook up the coil backwards and kicked the motor over 5 times before i realized my mistake. Then, about 2 months after i put the coil in the motor lost spark again! i checked the coil- it had no resitance, just like the original one! i cheked the stator- it was up to facory specs. So i took a CDI off another 1988 banshee, and i bought a new coil. So heres where i am as of now. 1) i got a brand new coil again, but it tests the SAME as the 2 other coils! that means no restiance! 2) i got voltage going to the coil 3)The ground on the back of the frame (on the voltage regulation module) is cleaned up So should i 1)buy a new dynatech CDI, NEW Stator, and see where i am from there. 2)put coil in and see if that fixes prob ( i am worried my system might fry the coil somehow?) 3)sell the shee to a blind guy for 20 $ and go buy a good hooker and a bottle of whiskey Quote
bansheefreak Posted June 21, 2004 Report Posted June 21, 2004 well you should go over your wires real good make sure none are cracked or broke...i have an old shee too and once when it would not start for anything i found a broken wire... my brother just got a shee too and it was running like crap and we found that one of the wires going to the plug wires was real loose so we had to pinch it to tighten it up.. runs fine now...so i'm just saying if basically everything that has to do with spark is new ... start looking for wiring problems mabye get a test light and trace it down.... 909 Posted June 28, 2004 Report Posted June 28, 2004 You need only 2 things to fire off the coil giving you spark, 1 is power to the coil, the other is a ground (trigger) and you said that you checked the ground to the coil itself. If the above is true you need to look at the trigger. The coil should read on the primary winding .28-.38 ohms and secondary should read 4.7-7.1K on a high quality (read Fluke) digital meter. If you're showing 0.0 on both coils then you're reading it incorrectly. I know there is a Yamaha factory manual on the net for free but I have never downloaded it. We buy all the manuals in print but maybe someone here can steer you over there. There is a whole ignition troubleshooting section in there that goes over a bunch more stuff than you already checked. It's a simple step by step and has never failed me. Look for that first. I don't think that any bottle of whiskey and hooker you could get for $20 would be good for you. Quote

mavguy Posted June 29, 2004 Author Report Posted June 29, 2004 Yep, I do have a Yamaha Dealer's Shop Manual For my Banshee. The guide is f*cking handy. My stator Checks out A-ok. My Coil IS BRAND new. The CDI is off another 1988 machine, so i think that it maybe fu*ked too. Im gonna buy a used working one for 400$ from a Dealer. Hopefully that fixes her. Its VEry easy to diasble the TORS with just some wire cutters and a pair of hands to pull off the old peice. I took mine off after the dealer told me how and why and what to cut, about the TORS. 909 Posted June 29, 2004 Report Posted June 29, 2004 mav, Before you go spend that kind of coin on a factory CDI, you could get the Dyna and get the same result, while saving some change. For the price of the factory CDI and possibly having to change out another piece of the ignition system you'll be at the same price as a new PVL or Fastline ignition and for sure be done with it. And I did replace everything in the electrical system except for the stator that was testing good. Then I bought a new stator from Ricky Stator and vola problem solved. If I were you I would try another stator and make sure your Pick up is adjusted right. Quote

hillcrazedbanshee Posted July 4, 2004 Report Posted July 4, 2004 Try this. I ran into the same problem and it took forever to find. Pull the spark plug wire off and put a plug in it. Place it where you can see it while sitting on it. Kick it to see if you have spark. "IF YOU DON'T" Then try pushing the thumb throttle a little bit and kick it over. IF you have spark then it is the little black box inside the thumb throttle. You can either replace it or cut and splice the two wires going into the thumb throttle together. Hope this helps cuz it was a royal bitch to find on my old shee. Quote
mavguy Posted July 6, 2004 Author Report Posted July 6, 2004 Don't matter none i sold the shee for 2000 can with a TONNE of extra stuff we did adjust the pickup, that helped a little, and some other stuff, now we got spark but its really weak. Quote
