reitler09 Posted March 15, 2004 Report Posted March 15, 2004 ok i have an 87 banshee..its been down since last may when my dad bought it off of my uncle it ran great that day then towards the end of the ride it died...and wouldnt start..so we tore everything apart and all that good stuff and finally got around to the cdi box..so my dad ordered me a dyna fs cdi box and we put it on and it fired up...this was probably 2 weeks ago..and it sat since may 2nd it fired up in his garage great, first kick everytime..we bring it over to my house and pull it outta the truck and it takes me several kicks to start it..then finally it starts up and i take off its running great then all of a sudden it starts bogging and now it wont let the power ban kick in most of the time every blue moon it does kick in and runs for a few minutes then goes back to bogging and backfiring like crazy...if you give it full throttle its almost like its getting tooo much gas because it kills the engine but half throttle will keep it running but no ban......... my uncles and dad know alot about 2 strokes and they are stumped....my dad thinks that it is the cdi...maybe too much spark or whatever and threw everything off...we drained the carbs cleaned them out cuase thought maybe it was the old gas....checked the reeds....no clue please help me out here guyss all i have on it is a boost bottle Thanks alot! MotulMonsta Posted March 15, 2004 Report Posted March 15, 2004 Did you check the plugs? Also you need to use resistor type spark plugs and caps. Sounds to me like it's running lean on top. Check the spark from the plugs..if it sparks it's not electrical...Do you have any timing advance? Use a set of BR8es, as opposed to B8es..yes it does make a diffrence. Quote

Nighty Posted March 15, 2004 Report Posted March 15, 2004 Wow this can be a load of things. but since you have people around who know 2stroke basiscs some of this might already be tried out. -fresh tank of gas- -check compression? what i think: check the gap between the flywheel and pickup coil if the gap turns out oki and you have a spark when you test the plugs on the engine then: check for airleaks and check your reed valves, one of the valves might be torn. everything torqued down right? for example: the head? reitler09 Posted March 15, 2004 Author Report Posted March 15, 2004 yes, fresh tank of gas didnt check compression yet...will do today as well as everything else you said..ill put a post back up and tell you if any good news...thanks alot and keep them coming Quote
banshee tuner Posted March 15, 2004 Report Posted March 15, 2004 If it cranks but won't rev right it could be that switch on the clutch for the tors. Quote
spoin39 Posted March 15, 2004 Report Posted March 15, 2004 Sounds like a jetting problem, what are your mods and jetting right now? Quote
ledofthezep Posted March 15, 2004 Report Posted March 15, 2004 Yepper, sounds like a jetting issue. Possibly a stator...backfiring, but with it not going past mid throttle without dying it sounds like you may need to adjust the mains. Quote

Try a new set and check them at wide open throttle, even if it dies, hold the throttle open and kill it, then check them. I also feel the main could use some tending to. What year did TORS start up? If it's in there, it needs to come out of there. "Grip it and rip it." Quote
richybanshee Posted March 15, 2004 Report Posted March 15, 2004 I had almost the same problem. My banshee started great and ran great most of the time, but there were times that it started to bog. Also when I rode it in the water it started bogging. The problem was the sparkplug coil. For some reason one plug was not passing the electrical energy to burn the fuel and for that reason I thought the banshee was runnig rich in the topend and I rejetted two size down. I damage a piston because of that. If you have a friend with a banshee ask him if you can try the sparkplug coil in your banshee. Also ckeck the sparkplug cables or see if the current is jumping between wires, in this case sometimes you can hear it too. Quote
reitler09 Posted March 15, 2004 Author Report Posted March 15, 2004 alright, will do actually ill try this soon becuase its at my uncles garage and he has a 2001 banshee..so i will do that when we go back over to his house...thanks alot i will try all of these and keep you up to date of whats goin on but keep them coming if you can and my only mods are boost bottle and the dyna fs cdi stock jetting Quote
bradrs Posted March 16, 2004 Report Posted March 16, 2004 I also agree. I don't think the plugs alone would cause that. The plugs can certainly cause a problem like that. The R in the plug stands for resistor. The resistor is there to cut the amount of noise the ignition is subjected to when a spark occurs. This noise can affect the processor running in the ignition. On older analog ignitions like the stock, there is no processor, and no problem if there is noise. But on virtually all the aftermarket ignitions, there is a processor to control the timing, which is why they all recommend resistor plugs. The dyna ignition does NOT like non resistor plugs, which is why when I wrote the instructions, I said to use resistor plugs Brad Engineer Dynatek Quote
sredish Posted March 16, 2004 Report Posted March 16, 2004 Ooops, I didn't see he had the dyna ignition. I understand that for that type of ignition. Ummm, later. Quote
BitchenBanshee Posted March 16, 2004 Report Posted March 16, 2004 I had the similar problem with my 96. Took me 8 months to find it. The damn thing would run great all day, then suddlenly bog out and not want to run. I had to give it half throttle just to keep it idleing. This thing was hard as hell to troubleshoot because sometimes it did it, sometimes it didn't. I swapped parts with a buddy to no avail. I finally decided to check all of the wiring from end to end. I took all of the electrical tape off and began checking. I started at the front, (Figures) and eventually found my problem at the rear. Yamaha puts the wiring to the CDI right next to the airbox. The wiring goes through three ears on the airbox to keep it from moving. Well, the ears on the box began chewing at the harness and frayed two wires. The wires sometimes touched, or made contact. This would cause the engine to die!!!!! I suggest checking that area first! I'm sure mine isn't the only bike with that problem!!!! Quote
gbf4ever Posted March 16, 2004 Report Posted March 16, 2004 I had the same problem. Check the gap between the pick up coil and the stator. That was my problem. My Pickup Coil finally shredded off completly so check that. Quote
