I’m currently working on a 98 Banshee for a client of mine. The Banshee is equipped with a Nology ProFire ignition coil and Nology HotWires. Banshee was bought in early April with Nology parts already installed. Ignition system looks to be installed correctly. Banshee ran like a beast then after about 3 or 4 rides the Banshee is now currently having an issue with Spark and then No Spark. I found that the OEM wiring harness was suffering from brittle wire disease. I got a STB harness with the tors delete thinking that was the issue. That wasn’t it. So then I switched the CDI ,Stator and the switch on the handlebars from another running banshee that was the same year and that wasn’t the problem either. I even disconnected the key switch and bypassed it to see if that was the problem and that wasn’t the issue. I then went ahead and switched the ignition coil and it fixed the problem.

Now my client knows that when he bought this Banshee it had a aftermarket ignition system installed.  But now my question is to go back with Nology or go with OEM ? If the Banshee was mine I would be putting OEM on it . What’s everyone’s opinion?

** Things I forgot to mention

Banshees mods are as followed HJR ported stock stroke cylinders, piston size unknown, HR Crank T&W, T5 pipes, V force 4 reeds, Chariot racing intakes without boost bottle, Pro Design Pro Flow with K&N filter, Coolhead with unknown dome size, Keihin 28mm pwk’s, timing advanced to +4 and Chariot racing water pump impeller and drain cover.

I also forgot to mention I did a leak down test and that was good and I did 2 compression tests and that showed 160psi in both cylinders.

I told the owner of this Banshee that when ever it comes to replacing anything electrical on the Banshee it should only be Genuine OEM Yamaha parts. So.. I explained to him that I really don’t know why the previous owner had this type of ignition system on it in the first place. So I took the extra OEM coil that I put on his banshee just as a test and put it back on and let him take it out for a quick rip today and when he came back he had a smile from ear to ear. So now I’m off to order a brand new OEM coil.

Thanks for the replies guys!!!

Some of us add a ground from a solid point on engine to a solid point on the chassis in addition to OEM grounding points. Pretty sure I seen it on Claude’s bike. Others will say not necessary.

I ran ground from motor to chassis but technically it doesn’t need it.

You don’t seem to be one that wastes time doing something that’s not needed…..

I only started doing it because I was chasing a problem. It ended up being something electrical.
