trickedcarbine Posted April 15, 2014 Report Posted April 15, 2014 I'm doing a motor for a buddy and the cylinders are out for porting and I'm trying to get everything else ready to go. The last problem I'm having is with the tranny. The thing has been in a box for many years and has surface rust and crud all over it. It is a tranny that's been cut by Brad at Tyson Racing, so I'd like use it if it can be salvaged. Any one know where I can get this thing tumbled at a reasonable price? Quote
SOUTHTHIRTY Posted April 15, 2014 Report Posted April 15, 2014 Drop it in a ultrasonic cleaner ...most motor shops have them 1 Quote
Bennett131 Posted April 15, 2014 Report Posted April 15, 2014 I doubt though that the ultra sonic will remove the rust... Quote
Bigairee Posted April 15, 2014 Report Posted April 15, 2014 I've always wanted to try this. http://antique-engines.com/electrol.asp Quote
sheerider1026 Posted April 15, 2014 Report Posted April 15, 2014 Why not disassemble and clean it good. Oil and emmory clothe Quote
Larry's Shee Posted April 15, 2014 Report Posted April 15, 2014 I've always wanted to try this. http://antique-engines.com/electrol.asp That process works good, bit slow though. Don't know what it would do to the polished gear surfaces. What about soda, glass, or walnut shell blasting? Quote
camatv Posted April 15, 2014 Report Posted April 15, 2014 glass bead can hurt the case hardening, walnut or shell works great, ultrasonic with rust solution is the better choice. OR Evaporust. you would need to baby sit it i use this stuff all the time its amazing. i buy a lot of vintage tooling and some scrap steel from time to time. works good on rusty gas tank too. you can get it at any decent auto parts store for around 20 bucks. get a plastic container from the local wally world, and your in business. wayne_smith97 Posted April 15, 2014 Report Posted April 15, 2014 I use citric acid and water. It generally has to soak overnight but works wonders. Quote
trickedcarbine Posted April 16, 2014 Author Report Posted April 16, 2014 Thanks fellas. Some good ideas here. Some, not so good..... Quote
hoppedupandcutdown Posted April 16, 2014 Report Posted April 16, 2014 Evaporust will do a great job, soda blasting won't cut rust. Quote
