A lot of lag in the begging of gears

I just picked up a 97 from a guy for pretty cheap in my opinion $1100.  It is very hard to start from a stop.  No matter how much I slip the clutch and how much gas I give it, when I start to move the rpms drop and the bike almost stalls out.  I have been riding 4 strokes all my life.  Is this the way all banshees are?  It is the same in every gear.  When I shift up a gear and hammer it, it almost seems like it bogs out then it gets going then boom hits the power band.  I am not sure of the gearing or if that will cause the issue that I am having.  I am wondering if the carbs not being jetted correctly or maybe not being in sync would cause this?  Could lack of compression be the issue?  The guy told me it has about 6-8 hours on the rebuild.  He said it's .40 over, the pistons, jugs, rod and bearings, and head are all new.  Mod quad cool head, and hi flow billet water impeller, boost bottle, 2 into 1 air filter and I think the rear tires are 21".  Any help would be very much appreciated.  Thanks

Since you already have these questions you can answer some of them yourself with a compression check and by looking at what jets you have and checking the sync on the carbs.

 

Report back with your findings and some one could probably tell you what you need to know then.

I will be doing that as soon as I get the chance.  Ive been pretty busy lately.  He also told me the carbs are bigger than stock but did not know the size of them.  Is there any way for me to see the size of the carbs?

Measure inside bore of the carburetor engine side.

 

Could also post a pic of carbs and we could at least tell you if they are stock

No its not normal but as to why its hard to say without more info. If it dies have bigger carbs it could be they are too big for a stock motor. Like I said tho hard to say without more info

Got ya.  Hopefully I will get home early enough from work tomorrow to get some pictures.  But I definitely wont be able to pull the carbs until this weekend

If you've never ridden a 2s, they're a different beast, no low end power. Bigger carbs hurt that more.

 

List all known mods you have, elevation you're at, and temp, and someone will be able to help get jetting close.

 

Pics and measurement of carbs will help .

I understand they are completely different but this does not seem normal at all.  I used to have a cr250 and it was nothing like this at all.  I'm trying to get pictures up now

Was a new clutch included in the previous guys full rebuild. Do you know for a fact it was rebuilt ( top end only) or were the cases split.

The guy seemed like he was a pretty straight forward guy and didn't seem like he was trying to jerk me around.  He told me the top and bottom end were both rebuilt.  He said it was a total of around $1600-$1800.  He never said anything about the clutch though
