Ice Tire Set up

Was wondering a good set up for Ice that I don't have to put 200 plus studs back in after every second ride. Wanting to try bead lockers and snowmobile studs through the tire with a tube. Just don't know anyone who has done it locally.

I don't race( don't know of any races close by). Just want to be able to hook like a motherfucker and not rip the shit out of my tires. I am willing to buy a set of tires and rims to use strictly for this purpose. I'm on Lake St. Clair and we run some small winding creeks and all out on the lake. Most times there is very little snow and I do most of my riding in the winter. I'm only looking for rear tire set up. The studs in the front work fine.

ok. I would like to do the snomo studs with backing plates and have been told to run a tube with bead locks. how many studs per tire? are bead locks necessary? I don't mind pumping the tires up before each ride but they have to last at least a day if I go without the tube.

Number of studs would depend on what you can spend, maybe 15-20 to start, always can add more. Thought I saw someone say they had no problem with studs and no tube. Maybe Slime ? Try with nothing , if it leaks to fast try something else. Just be careful , my son saw someone either at White Lake or Lake Orion chewed their leg up thru Carhartts trying to push his quad over a snow bank.

Here's the deal with studs, you need snomo studs most likely with a tube. Snomo studs will have carbide tips which are ESSENTIAL if you have to go even 50 feet on paved roads. Carbide tipped studs are the only things which will not wear out on pavement. If you use anything else, they will get instantly chewed up on pavement and will no longer bite on ice. Tire slime will not hold up at those temps.

Check the local kijiji, or craiglist listings, I look on there a lot, and I have seen ice tires with pics installed for pretty cheap. If your still looking, I have a set of ITP holeshots that have had pics in them in the past, and were taken out to put in another set of tires. Id like to sell this set, theyve still got 90% of the rubber tread left, and theyre mounted. Theyre 18 x 10-9's $100, and came off a 99

 

If all else fails, listen to the french guy, they know snow!lol!

I also have an idea for not using a tube. We use a below the waterline marine caulking on mounting bolt for outboards and the stuff is strong and pliable. so strong in fact that it held a 250hp V6 outboard on the boat without the bolts, had to pry the sucker off! Just not sure how it will handle the low temps.
