firebanshee Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 I am in the process of putting together a drag bike with a 535 10mil cheetah on alky, it should be in the 140+ horespower range. I will be running 300ft sand-dirt drags, do i need to spend the money on a billet 2nd gear? Quote
J-Madd Posted March 3, 2010 Report Posted March 3, 2010 I your cases are apart, and you have the extra money, you could go with the billet 2nd. I don't think it is at all necessary with that motor though. I ran the hell out of my 14 mil Cheetah (best e.t. of 3.68 with a jockey) and never had tranny problems. I don't remember the HP cutoff for a stock 2nd, but it's probably somewhere around 150 - 160 ? I'm debating putting a billet second in my 16 mil twister. I'm going from 72 mm bore to 78 mm bore while it's apart from a grenaded crank bearing on the dyno. Quote
flyhighprerunner Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 I'm with J-Madd on this one as well. I think if you have the money for it you mind as well put it end. Because if you think about it, say the stock 2nd holds up all season, is it going to hold up next season? Where as you know with a billet its going to continue to hold up season after season. I personally see it as, a little more added pertection. Remember a chain is as only strong as its weakest link. Quote
locogato11283 Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 youve already spent this much money. why not spend a few hundred more and go with the billet 2nd and not worry about it? how much money worth of damage will it do if it does come apart without it? Quote
lowriderb Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 it all depends, ive seen stock stroke bikes break 2nd gear and then ive seen bigger motors last on the stock 2nd gears. if your motor is apart now i would go with it. the 2nd gears are like .07 wider than stock ones so you will have to cut a new groove for the clip too. firebanshee Posted March 4, 2010 Author Report Posted March 4, 2010 Thanks for all the great input, redline also told me the same thing, probalbly don't need it but what if. I guess you have to pay to play, i think he said they are around $250. I plan on running the shit out of this thing so i guess it would be fairly cheap insurance. Can't wait till this thing is done. shanYE west Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 I really dont me to come across as being a negative or anything like that but.. I think a 140hp is going to be hard to get out of a 10mil (535) cheetah unless its on a generous dyno. Rather then base this decision off HP numbers that vary so much from dyno to dyno, it would be a better idea to base it off the size of the build. IMO anything over 600cc's would be a good point to start using a billet 2nd. If you got it apart and dont mind shelling out the coin... Why not?..at least it will be there for when you go bigger. But.. I dont think its needed for a motor that size. Quote
kubitza123 Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 I'm with Shayne, i've owned a 535 built by Dan hull and he will tell you 140 on a dyno thats not just giving numbers it aint going to hit 140 without a power adder. He told me and most of the other top builders 125-130 and thats on the back tires in tune with everything setup to perfection. If you have the $$ worth buying if not i wouldn't worry it should hold. And a 535 is a good strong motor i hope i dont regret selling mine. Quote
Streetking Posted March 4, 2010 Report Posted March 4, 2010 Not necessary for a 10mill 535 but definately a plus. I'm putting one in my 16mill 610 cheetah the very next time I break a tranny(which probably wont be too long from now). Quote
Koolguyson Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 Not needed. Your bike isn't putting down a true 140 either. Expect real world numbers around 115-125. Only way you would put out 140 on a 10mm is with a Cheetah DM. Now if you are running a 10mm DM you'll want the billet gear. Quote
firebanshee Posted March 7, 2010 Author Report Posted March 7, 2010 (edited) I think i made a SLIGHT miscalcuation(OOPS) the crank is a 10mil and the bore is a 74.5, what size will this make the motor? (558)? Edited March 7, 2010 by firebanshee Quote
banshee332 Posted March 7, 2010 Report Posted March 7, 2010 My 10mill cub broke 2 trannys before. Tore out second once and broke 5th once. I still dont have a billet second in it. I been running it for around 4-5 years with only 2 tranny problems Quote

firebanshee Posted March 8, 2010 Author Report Posted March 8, 2010 Since i am such a dumb ass and got the motor size wrong , does this little bit bigger motor warrant a stronger second gear? Quote
Ieat4strokes Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 Since i am such a dumb ass and got the motor size wrong , does this little bit bigger motor warrant a stronger second gear? If you have the money why not....extra insurance, 1 less thing to do when you upgrade, because you will eventually.... Ive always been told there is NO such thing as overkill when it comes to protecting your investment. I was buying stuff I didnt need for my stock drag ported motor, then went to my teeny lil 4mill drag motor and wasnt out of hardly no money because i had MOST the bases covered, if i wouldve only thought about a tranny lol Quote
