whats good gearing for trail riding

when I bought the bike there was 12t up front and a 46t rear its geared to low my shifts are way to short to keep up with my 4stroke friends, my bike is all out faster than theres but I just find myself shifting to much, the trails i ride are sandy & soft dirt with very few wide open runs, top speed is around 45-50mph the kicker is i'm 275lb so what gearing do you guys think I should run, thanks

well, start by bringing the front up to a 13, since 12t fronts are nown for failure, and see how you like it. tire size and powerband characteristics, along with terrain will be the real deciding factors, but that will still be pretty low geared, and perhaps you may like it, or will want to go down further in the rear to pick up some more topend.

I did'nt know front 12t where bad, Why is that? ya I think next I'll try a 13t front and a 42t or 44t rear. do I need a puller to take off the front sprocket? thanks, Matt

nope dont need a puller, just take the sprocket nut off, and the washer that you bend the tap over on top of the sprocket (lock washer).

from what i have heard, they tend to break easier, and put alot more strain on the chain and output shaft. also, what size tires are you running? mabey consider running a 22" tire before dropping teeth in the rear

I run 15 41 and i love it. I wouldnt drop my gearing any lower.

I rock a 13 42 setup on my trail bike, it works great in the trails and has great acceleration. on the wide open spots my buddies yfz gets ahead of me a bit though. on my dune bike i am running a 14 38 setup, in the wide open i am way ahead of the yfz.

i run a 14, 42 and i like it. seems like a nice compromise between either extreme.

I have 13/42 with my 22" rears with ice studs. No problems at all. Top end speed is more than enough.

I have a brand new 47 rear sprocket and I want to try it also with those 22"´s just to see how it feels.

 

Stock gearing with my 20" holeshot in summer time.

Adding teeth to the rear sprocket gives you more bottom end correct? I am running a 14/41 (stock) on mine and want a better holeshot. Any recommendations that would be a good compromise and also usable for trail riding? Thanks...

alright, this is really starting to sound more like a "what gearing are you running" thread than actually answering what's best for the origional poster. i still say to try the 13 and run 22's
