best tires?

Recommended Posts

The riding i do is mostly play around on farms and home made tracks/jumps. woods riding, and some trail riding too. as of right now i have 22inch tires in the rear, i run the stock swinger, and i have 15/41 gears. and i do not have a skid plate.

My tires just dont hook up well anymore like they used to so I'm getting some new rears. What tires would be best? What size would be best?

I want something that turns good. hooks up well. and will work good in mud/slick stuff too. I do like the ground clearence of the 22 inchers. But I think id like the quad to be more snappy with smaller tires.

I know i can change my gears to achieve that while having taller tires, but i already need tires and money is tight.

I think 18' would just be to small but i dont know.

what size would be best?

and does anyone know of some good tires that work well on a shee? any good tires? or ones i shouldn't get?

Razr 2's without thought or question

razr 2's are junk. overrated and overpriced.. the only reason they are so "popular" is because they have one hell of a hype machine called the razr marketing dept behind them..

these are real tires. they hook hard as fuck on all types of dirt. my brother just got a set of them and weve tried them out. they are the real deal.

stock 400ex tires? i've heard good things about titan fast trekker tires. anyone use them?

ive run them. i ran them for a while as i thought they were good tires, until i got into hillclimbing. then i started buying and testing tires. ive run almost every dirt tire there is. all the "popular" tires fail to meet my expectations. fast trekkers are too short, have a tread pattern that does not hook very well and they wear quickly if you ride any type of paved road.

here is my list of locogato approved tires(in no particular order):

1. ohtsu radials - reasonably priced. not too heavy. hook very hard.

2. stock yfz450 tires - can be bought for almost nothing. wear well even on road riding. hook hard at lower psi. very lightweight.

3. cut kenda knarlys (for straight line dragging or hillclimbing)- the king of hooking hard on dirt. no other tires compare to the hook these tires will provide you run at 1 - 4 psi. lugs are hard as to prevent "rolling over". wear well due to harder lug. light weight. priced well.

so how bad are the ohtsu tires on the road? the trail i ride has about 10-15miles of paved road. I think id like the ohtsu tires cuz they hook up well cuz that's my biggest problem, ive been considering getting a -1 or -2 swinger cuz of it. would 22in hook up better than the 20's? sorry for all the questions, i never bought a set of tires before...never kept a quad that long. lol.

i havent had time to test them on the road yet, so your guess is as good as mine. they look like they would hold up well, but who really knows. with these tires, i seriously doubt youd need to go shorter on your swingarm. they hook like crazy. i would steer away from 22's. stick with the 20's. i dont think you will regret going with the ohtsus and FAST is a good place to get them. support the site sponsors!

I ran 2 sets of 18" fast trekkers and they hooked pretty good, but they wore out a little quick. I then switched to 20" fast trekkers and they wore like iron and hooked like glue. If anything, they hooked a little to hard. I ride a little pavement, a little gravel and hard pack dirt alot. If your going to trail ride nasty stuff with dirt, mud and rocks I would roll with the fast trekkers hands down. I have ran cut Kendas all year and they work well on the track, but wear out very quickly on the trail. I would recomend them as a very good tire for the track, but they have a short life span on the trail.

the stock yfz tires are indeed very good as far as hooking up in almost anything. Problem with them is they wear very quick and if youre doing any kind of hard cornering, they will fold bad{ see pic. }If you spend the few extra dollars for the MAXXIS tires, they are the best.

here is the pic of me using the stock yfz tires at a GNCC race to show how bad they fold under hard cornering. I got a flat on the first lap and put these on, they got me to finish the race.
