I left the fuel o, on the 87 shee. I pulled the plugs to let it dry and finally it started but it reved high so I kept cutting it off. What are the danggers of leaving the fuel in the on or reserve position, and what should i do to get the bike back running right. I also switched from the twist to the thumb again for better wheelie control and it might just be a cable adjustment due to the switch. Somebody lay the info on me thanx

You shouldn't leave the petcock on because its possible for the fuel to drain out the overflows thus leaving gas on your floor.

 

Check your throttle cable, make sure the slides are not sticking, make sure the carb caps are sealed.

The needle/seat should turn off the flow of fuel coming into the carb. If the needle/seat is bad, or the float height is set too high, then you will get fuel overflowing out of the carb vents. Worn out reed petals can also cause flooding issues with starting.

 

If the throttle is sticking it can be slide issues, cable issue, etc......

The throttle's not sticking. I think it was flooded bad. I pulled plugs to dry her out and then she fired, but I guess the weld on the header pipe went bad around where it bolts to the frame and there is a small pinhole there. When she fired up premix was coming out of the hole in the header exhaust weld and she revved high as hell. Now the high reving is probably due to the thumb twist crossover. and I just have to adjust the cables, but why is premix not being burnt as it should? Is that what happens when it's flooded?

when it's flooded, the plugs will wet before they ignite, but if it,s just one side and she gets enough air, the other side could pump the other side untill it clears up, but the excess fuel will go out the exhaust. baisically, if you flood it, there will be unburnt fuel in the pipes, but should clear out after a min. i would check or replace the plugs when it's cleared up, replace the float needles, or adjust.

 

so i'm guessin that this is 2 things that happened at once, so make sure there is a good 1/8" slack at the thumb side, and sync the carbs. make sure there is no tension on the cables when you drop the idle screws all the way down, then bring the idle up 2 turns and start from there adjusting both sides together. if it still jumps really high, then you have an air leak somewhere and the flooding just added fuel to the extra air.

Yea that's what i figured. A real good buddy of mine told be the exhaust stroke will kicking it after it was already flooded may have pulled some gas in from the carbs because the open petcock may have let some gas get in. But I'm gonna let her air out rebuild my carbs, then check for air leaks. But i think she'll be fine once I tune that thumb control back in and get the gas outta her because she ran perfect before it cut her off and left the gas on. I know a guy who left his petcock on and filled the whole crankcase with gas. he started it and gas was coming out of the pipes.

I'm Brian from Alabama, now you know another guy who left the fuel on and had premix in his pipes. But it wasnt that much, now it's gone and I just got her back synced up and purring again thanx

Becuase youre crank is full of fuel, i never leave mine on....

my brother did that with a YZ250 funny thing is we didnt know he kicked it and it started and pumped about 2 gallons of fuel out of the pipe and cylinder it didnt miss or sputter or anything it was like WTF just happened. i love two strokes try that with a 4 stroke and youll end up with bent rods broken pistons haha

that happened to my skidoo and i had to pull the motor and empty a gallon out of the pipes. nno drain plug. at least my sled got a good cleaning around the engine

I read your other post on the white pipes, i have a white swingarm and it doesnt get too dirty. Just make sure you paint it right
