ok guys im in the process of changing my crankcase seal on the right hand side,(the seal next to the main shaft with the clutch basket etc)now i got the old one out but the problem im having is getting the new one in as the little rubber ring on the edge of the seal seems to be stopping it from going in,but the old one is the same.Know ive had many ppl and also a few yamaha dealer mechanics tell me it can be done from the outside without spliiting the case.Im just hoping someone on here can help me out as the bike is just about finished the restoration process and im hanging to get out for a ride. so if anyone can tell me how to get it in without splitting the cases that would be great

u should replace both sides, if it were me i would, its good to change them when ever u have the case apart. IMO

 

.....its never a good thing to cut corners

 

but if u must do it the easy way. i would try something to lub it up a lil like some grease/vasoline...

That is an important seal, split the cases and install the seal the correct way. The crank seal cannot be pressed in from the outside without the risk of damage and distortion. The last person in the world to touch my engine would be a Yamaha dealership mechanic...

 

I would also change them all while it is apart...

I had a dealership mechanic tell me the only way to do it was to grind off the rib, coat the seal with Yamabond, push it in and let it set up. He was a pretty good wrench and he did NOT recomend doing this but he had done it so someone could finish their weekend at the dunes, it was a temporary fix. You might as well bite the bullet, split the cases and replce ALL the seals. It definetly pays off in the long run to do it right.

It's really not that difficult to split the cases and do it the right way :thumbsup: If you don't have time to do it right the first time, when will you have time to do it right the second time??

ok guys cheers for all the reply's, after listening to all those replys ive decided to pull it down completly and give it a full overhaul.

didnt really wanna take a short cut its just im hanging for a ride as its been awhile.Glad i can get the help from here.all i gotta do know is persuade the missus to let me spend more on it and do a few extra mods while its apart

Glad to see you make the better choice, But your on your own for this part.
