  1. Advancing the timing makes the combustion event start sooner. The spark plug will actually start to ignite the AF mixture before the piston is at top dead center, this helps time the whole thing just right so it makes the most power. The downside to it is if you have too much timing, meaning that the plug sparks too early, the AF mixture can be pre-ignited and detonation will occur. This is when the piston is still coming up, and the exploding AF mixture is trying to force it back down. You will hear the motor "pinging" or knocking if this happens and it can burn a hole in a piston. Higher octane gas helps prevent this from happening because it burns slower, but is no substitue for "too much" timing. You have to find what your setup likes because it depends on a lot of factors. Compression, Elevation, Efficiency of the engine (filters, pipes, port work, how much air gets in and out of the engine basically), the octane of fuel you run, etc, etc, etc.
  2. Probably gonna go with 20x10x10 Haulers Trying to decide if I should go 8 or 9 paddles. I'm heavy, about 270-280 and my bike will have about 55-60hp if all goes well. Main type of riding is fairly firm sand (although there's some nasty sugar sand out there!) hillshoots, drag racing, and all around playing at walden, co and kilpecker, wy. Let me know what you guys think!
  3. I agree, sounds like something in the pilot circuit. I would step it up a notch on the pilot and make sure the jet and everything else is clean. How does it run with the choke on, or half choked? Does it idle?
  4. I would guess you need to hold the throttle open so the cyls can suck in enough air to fill them, thus building the correct amount of pressure. If they couldn't suck in all the air they wanted (slides closed) you'd get a skewed (low) compression reading.
  5. Thanks Jeff! You were a lot of help. 55-60 will kick a$$, I agree though these 4 pokes are getting stronger and stronger. My buddies yfz with a WR kit is sick. Oh well, that's why they make 7mils right
  6. Thanks shee!!! Hey now I never said I wanted to fukk with a 700 LOL. 450's are my preferred taste. We're gonna have to meet up sometime. You get to cheyenne much?
  7. Thanks man. That was the main reason I stayed w 19cc domes, I want to be able to run 91 (the highest they sell around here). I've talked with a few guys say +5 or +6 timing will work great at this altitude. Remember it's 6000-8500 ft so I can go a little more aggressive and still won't be where a lot of you guys are compression / detonation wise. Now when/if I take it to sea level, or close to it, I'll probably mix up the gas a little more and back the timing down.
  8. As a general rule, no. Some octane boosters advertise they "increase octane up to 6 points*" If you look on the back next to the little star * they say in a round about way that their way of defining a POINT is actually 1/10 of an octane point. So I guess if you used 10 times as much as they say, it would do what it advertises, or use 1/10 as much gas to put it in LOL. I'd stay away from it because, how can you be sure?
  9. DOH! I mean Jeff, not Mike!
  10. I called up Mike today (damn he's a busy guy LOL). He was kind enough to spend some time on the phone answering my questions and setting me up with what I needed. I zapped my card pretty quick but ended up with a NOSS cool head, 19cc domes, TORS delete and a K&N pod filter setup. I also have a deal pending on a set of used T-5's from lilmikey, so pipes will be changing as well. I talked to Jason down in CO today about porting my cyls and we're going to get that done pretty quick. Probably go .010 to freshen up the cyls and put some wisecos in unless they're in really good shape. At this altitude if it comp tests at 100+ or so I'll probably just put new rings on the stock pistons and ball hone it. Haven't decided. Looks like my mod list is going to look something like this now. NOSS head @ 19cc Dune Port Timing plate +5 (at this altitude I'm going to try +5 and see if it likes, if not I'll back down to +4) 86 TORS T-5's +4 swinger K&N Filter Pods V force 3's might upgrade the clutch, we'll see how it likes the power. I need to call Jeff back and get a case saver, temp gauge, carb sync tool and clymer's manual as well. Think I'll have any trouble with run of the mill 450's What HP would you guys guess that setup to be at, give or take? -Greg
  11. Hi Mike, Did you get my reply email? I'll take them for 275.00 shipped. Let me know how you would like payment. Paypal? Greg
  12. Awesome guys! thanks. You've already saved me some money. I'll hold off on the V3's for now. Can someone point to where I can buy the carbon reeds, and instructions on porting my own cages? THANK YOU
  13. Hey I'm low right now but if you could take 250 I'll take them. Do you have any pics? Shoot me an email [email protected] I can't check HQ at work Thanks, Greg
  14. Ok, I almost ordered a set of V force reeds but I've been readin on here and am getting mixed signals. Did someone dyno test these a while back? Can someone link that up? Also, if I change the reeds in the stock cages and port them, or if I use vf3's, should I run spacers? Thanks, Greg
  15. Thanks man. I'm curious about porting your own cages, and putting in carbon reeds. Where can I buy just the reeds, and can you point me to info on porting them? Thanks
  16. Thanks shee. You've been a great help on dr, I wouldn't know what half of this stuff is without your help LOL.
  17. Hey guys, Been reading, searching and talking to some guys I know on another site for over a week so hopefully I wont get flamed too hard for bein a noob. LOL I picked up an 02 Banch the other day. As far as the previous owner knows it has nothing but pipes and jetted for them. They are FMF fatties with gutted stock silencers. Here's my list of mods. If you guys totally shoot me down that's fine. I just want a good, strong running reliable bike. Maybe I'm asking too much out of the stock bore and stroke but I want to run with, or edge out my buddies YFZ's, a couple of which have WR 450 kits, one is a 468 big bore, the others are just bolt ons. Also, I live and ride btw 6,000-8,500ft. Here goes: Noss cool head w/ 19cc domes V Force 3 Reeds Dual K&N's w/ outerwears Adjustable timing plate, probably around +5 Dune Port 86 the TORS Temp Gauge I've got an experienced guy who wil help me tune it once I get it set up. I'd rather not have to run race gas, but I could mix 91 a little hotter, to 95 or so if I needed to. Remember I am at elevation so I may be a little lower on compression than most of you guys see with 19cc domes. I'd also keep the fatties for now, and eventually upgrade to T5's, CPI IF's, or Shearer IF's haven't decided. So what did I miss, or what would you do different? Any guess as to what HP will be with those mods? My intended riding is SAND and Hill Shoots (very steep ones in Walden, CO and Kilpecker LOL) and beating on any unsuspecting 4-stroke I can. Thanks guys, Greg
  18. Can these be used with a stock crank? Thanks, Greg
