  1. Maybe you should have just come out and said " DUDE....If you drag race or dune the steel basket SUCKS NUT".
  2. I hope you all are making the same power to weight as a dirt bike. I am.
  3. Good point but think of a sling shot. How much do they weigh?
  4. I'll see your Newton's second and raise you Newton's first law of inertia. " Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it." It's not like that force is gone and wasted. It is stored in Rotational Kinetic Energy. Again YZ flywheel Vs IT flywheel. Ride-ability That grunt you need popping out of a steep river bank. Take an old YZ400 into the woods and I'll ride a IT400 and see who stalls less and who is sore and wore out at the end of the ride.
  5. Drag racing and woods riding you got to remember are very different. I don't want my tires to beak loose. Smooth controlled power delivery to the ground is why 4 stroked rule in the woods and why they put heavier flywheels on 2 stroke enduro bikes
  6. You must also remember that any weight added to the clutch gear is 2.86 times easier to turn than any weight added to the crank do to the mechanical advantage of the primary/clutch gears. This is why I don't think it effected revving.
  7. Which goes on a 4 stroke. Which is a whole different ball game.
  8. No but believe it or not the hot ticket for the YFZ is the $900 REKLUSE z-START PRO AUTO-CLUTCH
  9. Not really guys. Look at the older YZ and IT Yamahas and the RM and PE Suzukis. KX and KDX Kawasasi. Yes you are correct. Same jug bit different port timing and pipe tuning. BUT....IT, KDX and PE had a heaver fly wheel. And Hinson makes a steel basket and the statement below is right from there web site. You all have to understand. I'm trying to go as fast and as controlled as I can with a 50" wide quad between trees that are 60" apart and you all know what a Shee is like when it comes on the pipes no matter how you build/tune it. There is no doubt that I was in much more control Sunday. If it is junk then someone make me one that is not cause it no doubt helped my lap times. Heavier basket to create the combined effect of a high performance clutch basket along with the added traction of a flywheel weight, both in one part. | Extremely wear resistant. | Increased oiling to help fight clutch heat and fade. | Improves clutch performance and life. | Precision machined from billet steel to aerospace tolerances. | Helps eliminate clutch chatter when used with Hinson Clutch Components pressure plate and inner hub. | Made in the USA
  10. OK F... work. I'll give you all the facts. Below is a copy of the email I sent Jim when he asked how I like the basket. From what I understand This was a small run of prototype baskets an I may have gotten one of the last ones. Bottom line is don't say something will not work until you have tried it. I am really impressed and surprised at the woods ride-ability improvements I noticed Sunday on my mildly modified stock size motor but not impressed at the quality of this particular unit. (not Jim's fault) and seems like just a simple CNC oversight. the general appearance finish looked real nice. Jim Will post full review on BHQ tonight but yes it did help a lot in the woods. was not however too pleased with the machining. Had to make .008" shims that go between the backing plate and the basket to allow free movement of the gear. On 2 of the fingers there was a much bigger gap between the basket fingers and the fiber plates. This caused a non contact space on the coast or un-driven side of 2 or the fiber tabs so much that I worried about breaking plates. I was surprised how well it carried momentum on the hill climb parts of the 9 mile XC track yesterday. Also did not seem to slow the revving but could swear I may have picked up a slight vibration. You guys have got something here. Just need a CNC program check and/or a tighter machining process and more people to try it. If Matt runs some more refined parts I would like to exchange mine. I could feel the difference the first hill I hit. Tim
  11. OK let's get back on subject. Full review tonight as I need to get caught up at work. Some good some not so. But the bottom line in my opinion is the added weight of the steel basket did not seem to slow the revving of the engine when warming up on the starting line. The effect on woods readability I must say, did surprise me. Yep it works. After the 1st lap my 50 year old ass actually gained enough confidence to take a shot at the pro hill where I'd normally take the longer "go around". Just seemed like the motor had a lot more grunt and was able to carry my speed a lot better through the whole length of the hill. Has anyone had a dirt bike and added weight to the flywheel? Been out of dirt bikes for a while but you use to be able to buy aftermarket heaver flywheels for dirt bikes to make them better hare scramble bikes and the effect of this heavy weight FW is just like what I felt in the 2 hour XC yesterday.
  12. Bata version of my new BBWC filter for forums is now available for download. The Bitch, Bash, Whine and Cry filter does just that. It let's through useful information and blocks everything else.
  13. Lane at Driveline clutch turned me on to a shop (A&S racing) that machines your stock inner and PP quite reasonably. Says they hold up in big motors just fine.
  14. You gotta let me in on how you do that?? Thought you have to cut the face of the PP and inner hub.
  15. Did you know Hinson also makes a steel clutch basket.
  16. Just thought I'd thrown this in the pot and give it a stir. Now standard on all Barnett clutch baskets. "stainless steel inserts which are 50% harder than before for extreme durability and to virtually eliminate grooving of the basket fingers" http://www.barnettclutches.com/off-road-clutch-baskets.html
  17. The forces we are looking at here (clutch plate vs clutch basket) is called brinelling. If you look at any aftermarket basket that has been in service for some time you will see the anodizing worn through where each fiber plate makes contact. The hardness of the base material is the only factor that will limit the brinelling past this point. Def. Brinelling is a material surface failure caused by Hertz contact stress that exceeds the material limit. It usually occurs in situations where there is a load with a lot of force that is distributed over a relatively small surface area. This failure is caused by just one application of a load great enough to exceed the material limit. Brinelling typically results from a heavy or repeated impact load, either while stopped or during rotation.
  18. I hate to burst anyone's bubble but hard anodizing is more for show. Anyone in the coating industry will back me on this. A 5 to 15 nano meter thickness of effective oxide layer will do little over a substantial base material.
  19. I will give you all an honest review. If there is anything about this product I don't like I will tell you.
  20. This is what I'm running. If you offer $50 they will accept. Same deal, Adjusted chain once in 2 races. http://www.ebay.com/itm/RK-of-Japan-GB520XSOx110-Links-Gold-Plated-O-Ring-Chain-520x110-G130-/181403282401?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a3c7a6be1
  21. Humm, unless my math is off each fiber plate has less than .094 square inches of contact area with the basket. Don't think much heat is going to escape there no matter what the material. Don't care if your making 30 horse power. the more clutch plated the better. That makes sense. How fast does a banshee motor need to accelerate in the woods? Does a 450 4 stroke motor accelerate as fast as a banshee motor? Yet a TRX450r or a YFZ450 will ALWAYS beat a Banshee in a harescramble. Don't ask me why I don't get a 450 cause I'm looking. Will I ever sell my Banshee.... NO.
  22. Don't need a bunch of people thinking for me. A steel basket makes sense after you see what 6 hare scrambles have done to a Mattoon basket. Yes I fan the clutch a lot. Anyone out there ever owned a 2 stroke dirt bike or raced motorcross ? Hugh Hugh. Apparently not. That's what a clutch is for. As for the boat anchor weight. Bet it don't weigh any more than a lockup or a sling shot. Besides, think people, how fast does the clutch basket turn? 3500 RPM tops. Do you really think 1 or 2 pound is going to make a difference in how it reves? On the flip side I can't really see it sortieing enough additional inertia to gain any more woods ride-ability or torque but I'll let you all know.
