The Low Down On Port And Polishing
99LRDblaster replied to sshepherd03's topic in General Banshee Discussion
ive seen guys take die grain bits to the intake ports and it gave them a little bit of power however you are not going to get anything eye popping. just get it doen the right way buy somebody with the tools and experience. you can open up the intake ports all you want but thats not what affects everything. unless you play with the transfer tunnels and exhaust ports and try boost ports than you are basically only adding a few hp and not getting great motor out of the porting. -
WRONG! just because it reads higher does not mean its accurate. you are suppose to do the test stone cold with the throttle held wide open. this gives an intak echarge to give accurate results in the compression. doing a compression with a warm motor is like milling a head for more compression when the rings are shot. but anwyays if you are getting 125 cold with the thottle open(quad off of course) then you are doing ok.

what kind of holder do you use to remove the nut? i would think the engine would turn over.

hopefully i can shed some info on this topic. i have 2 neighbors. one with a brand new YFZ and another with a brand new banshee. on a hard pack surface in a drag the YFZ pulls out in front but the banshee comes back and beats it by about a quadlength in the end. on anything softer such as loose pack or sand i would say the YFZ would win because of a superior chassis design which allows it to hook up. thats another reason why i think the YFZ does so well on the dunes is because of hookup and the torque of the motor can pull it harder through the sand, however on anything hard, flat, or paved the banshee has always won. we have switched riders multiple times and its always ended about the same. one reason for so many YFZ's smoking banshees is because most people are running a 85-90% engine as opposed to the YFZ's engine running great from the four stroke design. even with great maintenance and care the banshee still takes more wear over time than the YFZ which is one reason why we did the race with a brand new banshee and a brand new YFZ.

in stock form they are stiff, tippy, and somewhat underpowered. however when modded you awaken a machine you wouldnt believe. it will ride completely different once you start modding it. however if you can get a shee or a blaster why not just go for a 250R?
-
Exactly. That's why a golf ball is covered in dimples. It creates a boundry layer of air which allows it to cause less friction which in turn allows it to travel faster. that has what do with fuel atomization? and the dimples do create a layer of air around the ball to create less friction when it is SPINNING. a simliar idea is applied with an airboard with a puck.

and just where has yamaha claimed this hp # and why would an after market company trying to boost hp claim lower then the manufactor? and, what about people 30 years ago, do you really think they dumber back then? Most didn't use huge nation wide shops to do their modifications for them, they used trial and error and stuck with what worked. Like I said why would most shops who are all about volume go the extra distance when people will buy the run of the mill stuff they put on the shelves. (the extra work hollywood does goes against most business models, and the current trend of streamlining production, why provide extra service without extra compensation?......maybe the guy truely does care about the products he puts his name on...........very odd ) Now gurg, just because some thing doesn't fit neatly into your little box that you consider normal, doesn't mean that is wrong or doesn't work. Instead of me and those that have hollywoods mods constantly trying to prove that they work, why don't you try some of his stuff and prove that it doesn't work or do you plan on trash talking his products that you have never tried with your power of they keyboard. By the way you'll happy to know that most of hollywoods products are very affordable, so in you quest to prove him and countless customers wrong, you'll save a few bucks in attempting it. I wasn't talking about you when I said "side kick" I was talking about his little butt buddy criminalpoet. Most people back then had nothing to test their work on so of course they'll think it goes faster after they spent 80 hours working over the engine. Sure going in and hacking up the ports is going to increase the horsepower slightly, but a real builder who knows what he is doing can increase horsepower dramatically. Who is comparing Hollywood to huge nationwide shops? I am talking about the small 1-2 man shops like the ones around here for instance. The shops that can get you huge power increases for the same price as those hack builders that only give you 1-2HP increases. Whats the point of charging someone for something that is totally useless? I would say that's why most shops don't polish intakes, because they don't want to waste peoples time and money on something that does nothing. You and "those that have hollywoods mods" have done nothing to prove that they work.. Well I take that back, you did dyno your motor and that pretty much proved that his porting is crap. He can give you all the excuses in the world "That IS a good number, you didn't have the right tires, blah blah blah", but face facts, even going off your stock horsepower numbers that would only amount to a 4-5 HP increase out of a FULL port job. I seriously doubt a big bore is going to double your horsepower, but CT's 240 big bore dynoed out at 40HP. That's almost double what your ported motor put out. I Still find it very sad that a builder expects his customers to not only pay for his work, but pay to have it tested to find out if it actually does anything. Hey, why don't you show me some dynos that hollywood has done over the years during his "over 10 years of testing"? Oh wait, they don't exist! So hes just been blindly hacking away at cylinders never testing them, probably never even making a port map or measuring the ports either and charging them to do it. I bet he doesn't even have a degree wheel does he? Whats the point of charging someone for something that is totally useless? I would say that's why most shops don't polish intakes, because they don't want to waste peoples time and money on something that does nothing. the last i checked it reduced carbon deposits and ive also seen that marc has some of the most affordable prices around so i dont see how he is "wasting people's money" You and "those that have hollywoods mods" have done nothing to prove that they work.. That's almost double what your ported motor put out. how about you face the facts. DYNO TIRES DO MATTER. you ASK ANYBODY with dyno experience and knowledge and they will tell you that KNOBBY tires will not give anywhere near a higher number than DYNO TIRES. STREET vehicles use DYNO TIRES on their runs and they are already running a pretty much smooth surface street tire and they see improvments from just switching over from smooth to smoother. i wonder what it would run if it had a set of hoosiers or something else smooth to show a dyno. ill be waiting for you to tell me how it doesnt affect dyno performance. its not an excuse it is a FACT. as for CT's big bore kit and its dyno i am going to email CT just to prove what im saying. I bet he doesn't even have a degree wheel does he? oh my bad i guess since so and so over at some big name comany doesnt put up dynos and doesnt release any information that he is instantly blindly hacking away at cylinders. i bet he doesnt do any flow bench testing, dyno testing, and other testing on all his products. wow i bet he just sucks major balls then

my forst actual ride was last summer. i had rode them before but never in good conditions. my friend had just bought a 97 T5 shee and we stole it from his house while he was at work and we were riding it. at the time it was excessively lean with the stock jetting already but nobody ever checked(although i reccomended it). anyways we warmed it up and took it down the street and i hit firsta nd shifted into the second just to hit massive wheelspin and it about ripped me off while it was shooting up. asfter that i had fun on iy. doing donuts and powerslide on pavement. my friend was a little suprised to see us riding it by him and all. but overall i like my blasters overall feel better than the banshees right now. this time its going to be jetted right and im trying to smooth out the powerband a bit but giving it some low end after his complete meltdown and me tearing down the whoel engine.

How Many Minutes Do You Warm Your Shee ?
99LRDblaster replied to xt45's topic in General Banshee Discussion
on my blaster i usually start it and then let it idle for about a minute then rev it a bit to keep the rpm's varied. nobody else does it but letting it idle for 5 minutes over time just doesnt seem like it would be good running in the smae rpm for that long. so i vary it between idle and 1/4 throttle for at least 5 minutes. -
you guys know anyplace to get bottom end kist if he would happen to need them? if it was my shee i would be getting a full port and polish and long rod put in.
-
i dont have a flywheel puller but we got soem at school so it will work out there. i wish i had an impact gun. it would make things easier for more than just this project. i know a guy that has one so maybe it will work out there as well.
-
is there anything key to watch out fro on the shee engine? i got a clymer but im not exactly loaded with tools so if i would need any of them id liek to know. i wish it was my shee because i would be having some fun playing with it while its all apart.

How do you figure I'm destroying his business? All he needs to do to end all this is show a flow sheet to show that his designs work. Usually I wouldn't care, but this guy goes out of his way to make it seem like he is the best and everyone else sucks so I want to see some proof if he is going to bash everyone else. He won't even TELL people how it works. He just expects everyone to send him money and he'll make them go fast. That might be good enough for you but that sure as hell isn't good enough for me. You seem so confident that rifling and polishing the intakes work but you have never seen a scrap of proof from HWD that it works and EVERYONE else who knows about motors says its a load of crap, I don't understand how you can still think it works. You have no reason to ive seen no proof to contain that it doesnt work. the customers feel an improvement, the dyno shows an improvment, etc. if all of this comes true every time then how is it false. HWDs IP has matched tesscos on 3 different websites, HWD has reasons to bash CP, he's immature, he's done this in the past to Trenga and the only thing tessco has ever posted anywhere was bashing CP and promoting HWD. It is him, I don't need to prove it beyond a reasonable doubt. I have all the proof I need. If it was somebody using a different ISP then I would believe its not him but all the evidence points at HWD. hey if thats what you want to believe than all the power to ya. i fidn it weird that even if it was him that he would would continue to do it if it was going to hurt his business. thats like knowing the cops are waiting outside so you go outside and continually shoot people. seems rather odd and improbable. That might be good enough for you but that sure as hell isn't good enough for me not every single company on the planet has a flow bench machine and a dyno. marc and his customers have all explained multiple tiems how his designs work. also he doesnt make himself to be the best. he customizes customers ports unlike bigger names that just slap their pre ported kits on there. i have no doubt that soemthing with a drag port could beat him in terms of dragging. boyesen and Vforce dont have flow bench results anywhere posted. i guess that makes them lame, inaccurate, and unreliable then. they are just not good enough for naybody then since they dont have that. most people dont end up on the internet searching for what pipes work best from dyno sheets. you see people buying cheap ass DG pipes and thinking they are great until they get beat by a blaster or banshee with a healthy set of toomey's, LRD, or CPI's. it comes in pretty clear that derrrrr they are better. LRD has never dhwon a dyno for the blaster and yet they are among one fo the best aftermarket pipes out for blasters.

haha your right he had a short throttle cable on it and when it cranked up it ran kinda high..airleak umm no hes got new rings pistons and stuff and b4 long ill do everyone a favor and besure to pist a vid of us drag racing...oh i know your going to bring up anohter excuse just like always yeah kind like how he didnt bore it or hone it at all after he did that.
-
yeah whatever. my thoughts on it is its just another basher of marc. even if it was him the first time i dont think any person with half a mind would come back and do the same thing after everybody had found out. therefore i highly doubt its him. dont bring in the whole IP issue either. anyways im tired with this issue. im sure many of the people on this board are sick of hearing about it. although im sure some are getting entertainment out of the fighting. anyways his customers have noticed a difference with his mods and have had no problems with his designs. if you havent had his work and think otherwise, dont buy his product. its your choice. im just going whats worked for me and various others. only reason i got pissed is because your destroying the mans business.
-
yeppers you can see how the rings never did seat by the blow by past the rings and the scoring of the piston from either an air leak or extremely lean jetting.
-
oh thats right. engines always look like this after you put a fresh top end on them.
-
well went to a guy that has bit more shee knowledge than me and asked for his opinion and he had the same thoughts as me........split the cases, so thats the route we are gonna go if i find time.

carbon will not stick. you try to explain in detail very vividly how a rough intake can atomize fuel/oil better and then ill agree. How often do you see carbon build up in the intakes? How about you read back through this post like I've told you 20 times to see how it atomizes better. Do you you really think hollywood knows something that every other builder doesn't? How about the guys that spend thousands and thousands of dollars on testing and tuning, don't you think they would have tried polishing the intakes once or twice? What makes you think hollywood is right if he has never had his motors tested? That's totally rediculous. If you want to think that top builders who've spent hundreds/thousands of hours testing don't know something then some hack (who probably works out of the back of a van) who has never tested a motor does, then go ahead and do it. Those of us who aren't as ignorant will just have to laugh as we blow by you in a race tell me why you are comparing a RWHP to the crank hp off a shee. any logical person on this forums(which is 99% of the people here) that has dealt with dynos will tell you that there are many variables that determine a dyno output and taking your everyday blaster with the offroad tires on the dyno is not going to give the best number for overall output. i already stated that but i guess it didnt sink in. You only wish that was crank horsepower I could care less what you have stated, some small atmospheric changes aren't going to make a 50% HP difference, so keep trying to make up excuses why HWDs motors are such slugs How often do you see carbon build up in the intakes? ummm pretty often for those who do not run real clean burning oils(which is most people). the shit begins to buildup on the rough spots of the windows. How about you read back through this post like I've told you 20 times to see how it atomizes better. doesnt really explain how it works. Do you you really think hollywood knows something that every other builder doesn't? its not something every builder needs to know. carbon has a harder time sticking to a smooth surface. ive seen numerous people run polished intakes and none of them have any porblems at all with an inadequate burn. i just got back from a friends that just tore down a shee and he took a die grain bit to the bridges and kinda beveled them(nothing catastrophic) but he polished his intakes on his banshee and his previous one and guess what? no probs. no signs of fuel globbing in portions of the head from burns. they run like raped apes too. You only wish that was crank horsepower ok find me a dyno sheet showing the RWHP of a shee since your so sure. there is NO WAY a STOCK banshee is putting down 35hp at the wheels. I could care less what you have stated, some small atmospheric changes aren't going to make a 50% HP difference the last i checked a tenth of a horsepower isnt a 50% change. so keep trying to make up excuses why HWDs motors are such slugs yet youve never rode one or seen one run

i believe your probelm may eb the little ball inside the kicker. it may be worn. however i am interested in figuring out how to stop the rattling of the the shee kickstarter. could you just take a rubber bushing and cut part of it in half where the kicker rotates?
-
id clean the carbs and put new gas in it. if it continues then richen up the air screw by turbing it clockwise in at increments of 1/2 turn. if there are still problems i would do a compression check.
-
STUPID....the banshee has the snap, the power, the awesome feeling....a yfz is just another (4-strokes are like tampons, every pussy has one) (excuse my lang.)4-stroke with more tecnoligy...whats the diff? older the faster.....87 shee's fly...my 93 shee flys......so i dont think there that good thats great now go to the MX track and race one and come back and give me your imput.
-
my friend go his cylinders done 20 over and eveyrhting top end wise is pretty much ready to go after we paint his cylinders. however during his shees meltdown it did manage to go into the bottom end(unsure of how long it lasted). when we took the top end out this was the first thing i checked, the bottom end. i took a mini mag and sure enough their was debris(piston) laying in the bottom end. im pretty sure that he should crack the cases and inspect the crank but he's not going to do it so what would you guys suggest to use to flush it out? kerosene the only thing i can think of at the moment.
-
well first of all wanker, your friend ddint pay attention to the instructions marc provided and he had an air leak and burned up his top end. if you can take pride in beating another quad with an air leak on the verge of blowing the top end you might as well go beat up some retarded kids and go brag to your mom and dad about it. secondly, i really dont doubt that you beat his pd3 if you have craig's dune port. obviously his larger dune port is going to make more power over a more trail/moto oriented type bike. im sure the drag shees up at silver lake will get beat by your local shee MX riders in a drag. i mean no disrespect to craig's work at all. he seems to do quality work and i would do business with him at any time if i needed to but your just being an ignorant ass about it.
