twinrock Posted May 19, 2008 Report Posted May 19, 2008 ok this is an age old question but which makes better over all power? an air box or individual filters..it seems what ive read here on hq forum the prefered choice for more power is 2 pods..but on the rz/rd forum (rz350 road bike..)they say air box makes better power..!!! all i know is that on my bike when it was dynoed there was a huge drop in power when i put individual uni filters on..as apposed to nothing on at all..my bike is totally custom and has no stock air box so to speak so i couldnt use one..but im thinkin of makin one up, id love to know other experiences..thanks Quote
njbanshee Posted May 19, 2008 Report Posted May 19, 2008 I'd say pods are a better way to go. More air flow. Quote
locogato11283 Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 pods. if air boxes were better all the drag guys would run them. its kinda nice those guys spend all their money on the test and tuning for shit like that.. then we dont have to. Quote
BaNsHeEs RuLe! Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 Simple, more air=more power pods=more air Airbox=less air You mentioned Unis, try K&N , much better flow than Unis. Quote
twinrock Posted May 20, 2008 Author Report Posted May 20, 2008 i thin k its funny that all the top banshee drags run filters/pods..but all the gp racers run air boxes..!!!! all know is my bike makes a huge difference with the no pods on at all the pods kill the power.. Quote
gumby6t9 Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 huge difference with the no pods on at all the pods kill the power.. WHAT??? Quote

Do you think that has any thing to do with rules regarding air intake, fires, safety, etc? Not trying to be a smart ass, that's a legit question... Quote
twinrock Posted May 21, 2008 Author Report Posted May 21, 2008 yes maybe now that i think about it..not sure...any how..i will make up an air box for my set up..ill make a couple of different lids..take it to the dyno and see whats up..as im no prepared to suffer such a big loss in power due to my current set up... Wildcardracing Posted May 21, 2008 Report Posted May 21, 2008 You're running pods now correct?? Sure you'll loose some hp on the dyno running filters as opposed to not, but it's the price we all have to pay for engine longevity. I'm pretty sure the pods make better power than the airbox. I prefer the uni's myself, not for power resons...but do to the fact I have seen the k&n's such dirt, the uni's offer better filtration IMO. Quote
BaNsHeEs RuLe! Posted May 21, 2008 Report Posted May 21, 2008 Let him put an airbox on, that way he will be sure to not suck dirt and dust when we all fly by!!!!LOL JK, MX racers don't use airboxes, GNCC racers use them due to the wet and muddy conditions, GP racers use a modified airbox due to rules. If you want to get the most power, run naked carbs....if you want the most power and you like to ride for more than 10 minutes, get Unis or K&Ns, the airbox will never make the power that pods do, that is a simple fact. I run both setups depending on riding conditions. With the airbox on, no lid a K&N with outerwear I run 2 main jet sizes down, with K&N pods I go up 2 sizes. This is from doing extensive plug chops with both. The point is , with pods going up in mains means I am sucking more air, going down on the mains with the box means less air. Good luck!!! Quote
Animalman294 Posted May 21, 2008 Report Posted May 21, 2008 pods. if air boxes were better all the drag guys would run them. its kinda nice those guys spend all their money on the test and tuning for shit like that.. then we dont have to. Isn't that very nice of them. I like it when other people save me money............... WHAT??? Ya, I thought about that too. No air restriction is great, but then sand in my motor isn't to cool........... Quote
twinrock Posted May 21, 2008 Author Report Posted May 21, 2008 hey guys, firstly its not a sand dwelling quad..or even a quad...but it is a banshee /rz engined bike http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e47/twinrock/mito450.jpg i understand the concept of more air is more power but thats not the purpose of an air box...an air box is designed to provide cool, still, non turbulant air...which according to production and gp racers is the desired option to have....the thing is that there is a 15plus hpr difference with and with out pods..they are uni filters, and yes they were both jetted by a pro dyno tuner to get the best result..im not saying u guys are wrong im just after advice and help..as im having to completely different answers from here and gp racer forum...by the way ..gp racers here are not restricted by the rules to run an air box..they can do what they want in gp..production racing is different tho...
