714banshee380 Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 (edited) Hey everyone I thought I'd do a quick write-up on how I painted my Douglas rims. Well as all of you know powdercoating isn't cheap so I decided to spray paint em. I went to my local autoparts store and picked up some wet 300 grit sandpaper, 1 can of Dupli-color aluminum sandable primer, 2 cans of Dupli-color flatblack acrylic enamel, and some acetone. I ebelieve everything cost me around 20.00$ (I already had some acetone laying around the house) First of all i got my palm sander and starting to sand the heck out of my rims. I also did the hard to get areas by hand. Sanding is the key to painting. If you go and ask any painter they will tell you with the proper prep work you get the best results. Anyways once you have spent time on sanding the rims I cleaned them up with some acetone. Next I didn't feel like having my tires dismounted then remounted again after i was done so I got some masking tape and some paper and taped off my tires. Once everything was ready to go I started spraying. I did 2 coats of primer waiting 20 minutes before each recoat (the can says it dries in ten minutes). Then I sprayed the black on. I sprayed a total of 3-5 coats I don't remember how much exactly but atleast do three. Also make sure you wait atleast an hour and a half to two hours before recoating. And that's pretty much it. If you do not give time for the paint to stick you will end up doing it again as the paint will just peel off. Hope this helps anyone who doesn't have the money to get them powdercoated ,Steven The first two pics are of them primered, and the next three pics are when they are all done. 01Banshee350 Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 I painted some of my stock gold wheels black a while ago. Mine lasted for a little bit but they started chipping and flaking a little now. I didnt do near as much prep work as you though so yours will probably hold up better. Quote

We all know 4$ spray paint is not gonna hold up like powdercoating obviously but this could be a temporary choice for those wanting to get some pc'd beadlocks or something or it can be a permanent choice Quote
714banshee380 Posted May 3, 2008 Author Report Posted May 3, 2008 I promised i would... here's how they turned out. Quote
bansheefreak Posted May 4, 2008 Report Posted May 4, 2008 looks good.. here is some i did.. but i let air out of tires and just stuck paper between the bead and tire... pinched it in there worked great... Quote

nick t Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 you guys inspired me i wanna try to do mine. first off what if i dont have a palm sander or any sander? second off do i still sand if they are just plain silver rims? what would that achieve Quote
bansheefreak Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 i didnt sand mine they was shiny .. thought paint would turn out better.. just make sure it real clean of dirt ,oil etc.. but keep in mind you may have to touch up paint it at some point.. knowing that didnt bother me to paint them with out sanding..
