gregrob Posted March 28, 2008 Report Posted March 28, 2008 Painted them with a gray metallic paint. I couldn't find the color I wanted in hi-temp so I got the pipes hot by riding the bike and stood it on its butt to paint them. Baked it on. Turned out pretty good, pics start here: http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2338499430083164471uJOFMl Quote
wacko2000 Posted March 28, 2008 Report Posted March 28, 2008 Not bad, they came out real nice.. As far as pipes go, the color is different.. Quote
gregrob Posted March 28, 2008 Author Report Posted March 28, 2008 Thanks a lot man. I was looking for something different and I didn't want to go with silver as a quad already had WAY too much silver on it to start with. Really generic color to me. So I thought gray would look good then I found this gray metal flake stuff and thought it would be even better. I'm happy with how they turned out. Just hope the paint holds up ok. If not easy enough to spray em every couple of months though. Quote
nayr742003 Posted March 28, 2008 Report Posted March 28, 2008 i thinbk it looks really good did you use high temp paint? I heard if you use grill paint it works the best. Quote

Didn't use hi temp, just got the pipes hot and then sprayed it. Bakes the paint on that way and it will stick. what was the brand name of the paint it looks really fresh. my t5 need a fresh coat and it sounded pretty easy. It was dupli-color metallic gray. Found it at walmart. Hate buying cheap walmart crap but this was good stuff. About 5 bucks a can. I can snap a pic of the can this weekend. Quote
monster_energy06 Posted March 29, 2008 Report Posted March 29, 2008 nice job. i did the same to my sled pipes. only i just let them sit on a wood stove for 30min. paint them with tremclade bbq paint a good 3 coats. then put them back to dry and recook. then i gave 2 good coats of gloss black and put them back on the stove.. works great Quote
_Hex* Posted April 4, 2008 Report Posted April 4, 2008 sup man, i did my silencers with a black nickle coating ill post up the pics so u guys can check them out they look pretty sweet but expensive ass hell :/ Quote
Animalman294 Posted April 4, 2008 Report Posted April 4, 2008 I wonder what the longevity is going to be on those pipes painted without high temp paint. Sure they look great now, but how long does it last before you have to repaint them? Quote
714banshee380 Posted April 7, 2008 Report Posted April 7, 2008 How did you get to spray the pipes on the inward area (where they are facing the motor) and also did you put paper over the whole bike to protect it from getting painted??? Quote
gregrob Posted April 25, 2008 Author Report Posted April 25, 2008 Sorry I didn't respond sooner guys. I've got quite a few rides on the machine and the pipes still look great. The only discoloration is right where the pipe comes out of the head, and almost any finish will have some discoloration there because of the heat, even chrome. As far as covering up the rest of the bike I didn't worry about that. Just keep a wet rag handy and wipe off any overspray. It wasn't really that bad as I kept the spray to a localized area on the pipes and just painted them slowly. I got it on there without getting any on my plastics, etc. I did touch up my frame where the paint had been rubbed off, and painted my a arms with the same paint and it looks really good. Quote

jonnyb Posted April 28, 2008 Report Posted April 28, 2008 Used to same brand here's how mine turned out. Only a different color and mine are fattys. Quote
Washburn Posted April 28, 2008 Report Posted April 28, 2008 I think they look killer. Yours too Jonnyb. I would imagine that the paint you used wont hold up anywhere near as long as Hi Temp paint. I would worry about getting them wet while theyre really hot. Quote
jonnyb Posted April 28, 2008 Report Posted April 28, 2008 Mine were 1200 degree hi temp, forgot to add that. Quote
