fun_on_the_sand Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 Hey guys maybe this is not the right forum for this topic, but I need a quick answer, I am leaving in 2 hours to glamis and I need to know if there is a way to figure out if a gas container (5gal) has already oil in it or not... Thanks Quote
sheerider1026 Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 hey man, if in doubt, pour it out.. its not worth taking a chance on it.. just start out fresh and you won't have to worry about it.. Quote
wacko2000 Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 I AGREE WITH THE ABOVE ^^^^^^^ pour it out Quote
fun_on_the_sand Posted March 20, 2008 Author Report Posted March 20, 2008 I thoght about that, but is $8/gal race gas and there is no place where I can go and get more... what if I wait for the tank to empy and put about a litle of that gas in the tank and see if smoke comes out of the pipes? is that too risky? Quote
sheerider1026 Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 risky, can decrease engine life drastically!!! compare the price of the fuel to a bore job and a new crank!!! i would poor it out.. you don't want to worry about it while you are riding anyway!!!!! hell put in in your lawn more!! worst than can happen is it will smoke a little if it did have oil in it!! its your bike though, do what you want Quote
Bansh-eman Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 what oil do you normally use? i have never seen a premix that isnt some sort of coor. so it should be a dead give away if its mixed Quote

fun_on_the_sand Posted March 20, 2008 Author Report Posted March 20, 2008 I did a litle test... I have a container that I am POSITIVE has oil, a container with litle left over of the same racing gas, and a container in question I used a clean black plastic surface and lay a few drops of the three containers. Results: - The gas with oil left a mark on the surface (I guess is oil residues) - The gas in question lef the exact same mark as the previous - The gas with no oil left nothing, zero, nada. Everything evaporated What do you guys think? Quote
Dave I. Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 this wont help you right now but next time you mix gas and dont use it, get a sharpie and write mixed on the jug. next time you use the fuel just wipe off the writing and you are back to normal. Quote
peterlocal22 Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 if its like a greyish black then your good. although i wouldnt risk it either. keep for lighting fires Quote
fun_on_the_sand Posted March 20, 2008 Author Report Posted March 20, 2008 I did another test, using those disposable blue towels you get at AutoZone I cut 3 strips 2in wide and dipped each one on every container and let them dry. The strips dipped on the gas with oil and the gas in question left a very noticeable stain on the strip, exact same stain (oil stain) The strip dipped on the gas only container has no stain what so ever, clean as new. I will use it VERY CAREFULLY during this trip and let you guys know. Quote
350BANSHEE350 Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 dude just take the gas hose off and pour a little into a clear container, how could you not remember to put oil in it, you can see every kind of oil accept amsoil interceptor is gas Quote
shee4speed Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 hell put in in your lawn more!! Sorry, thats funny! Quote
ClimbAnyHill Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 Pour some out, you can feel the oil in your hands & will stay wet.. Straight gas will evaporate! Quote
gregrob Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 Pour it into a glass jar, and pour some straight gas into a glass jar and compare the colors. Castor 927 is a lot like Amsoil interceptor. It's really light and hard to tell if it's mixed when looking in the jug. Other oils give the gas a dark green or bluish tint but the castor oil is brown so it's harder to see. The mixed oil should look brown and straight race gas will be almost clear. Hope that helps. Quote
