rtcc Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 ok guys, I have been searching through this place for 45 minutes and havent found ANYTHING!! anyway, I have a fairly new chain, has maybe 10 hours on it. While the bike is down I figured I would pull it off, clean and re oil it. What is a good way to clean it? It is an o-ring chain. I just dont want to damage the o-rings. What can I use? or is the cleaning even necessary? thanks Terry Quote
Bansh-eman Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 o rings are hard to clean, you cant use solvents or pressure washers without messing them up. your best bet is to just use a rag and try to wipe down any grease and grim that has collected and re oil it. on non orings you can put them in a diesel prts cleaner and then scrub the balls out of them. once they are clean let them soak in atf and wipe them down. we did that when we raced. and a chain would last for ever Quote
Smokin' Joe Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 On my street bikes i had, I always soaked them in kerosene and scrub them with a bristle brush. diesle would work too. It never hurt the chain and I used VERY little lube. My old GSX-R 750 has alot more power than a shee does. Quote
rtcc Posted March 5, 2008 Author Report Posted March 5, 2008 Thanks guys, Ill just take it off and scrub it. I thought I remembered someone using kerosene but didnt want to get it mixed up with something else. If its crazy dirty I will soak it. Terry Quote
gentner8 Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 Try a citrus degreaser and a hose. Use a nylon bristle brush and you should be good to go for most cleaning. The citrus is less harsh than most of the heavy duty degreasers, and it works pretty well. Quote
hyperlite33 Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 I use Simple Green and a old toothbrush and scrub away. Works real well, and helps clean up other parts that it gets onto also! Quote
jbooker82 Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 Gunk Engine Bright. Gets all the stuff of. Just get an old bucket and let it soak in there. Then just brush it down with a parts cleaner brush. Then just wash it off with some water. Let dry and then lube. Quote
Screaming Yellow Zonker Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 I use a hard bristle brush to clean it off the lube the chain. Worked for 5 years on one chain. Quote
Twistedtrik Posted March 5, 2008 Report Posted March 5, 2008 I soak mine in Diesel. Done it the same way for 20+ yrs and won't change a thing. I refuse to use chain wax also. It builds more crap than anything. Soak in Diesel and a quick shot of WD-40 or Liquid Wrench and be done with it. Quote
Smokin' Joe Posted March 6, 2008 Report Posted March 6, 2008 yea me neither, i NEVER used chain wax. a little bit of RK-O Ring lube Once a year. anyone ever stick thier finger in diesle or kerosene ? it leaves an oily residue on you doesn't it. well it does the same thing on your chain. Quote
