old87shee Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 ok so i picked up this old 87 from a friend of mine, figured for a couple hundred bucks, what the hell.. Well the thing ran when i got it, but was kinda sketchy on top end, but it had been sitting for a while, so i just figured the carbs needs cleaning and the gas needed to be flushed out and done away with. Well i flushed the fuel system, cleaned the carbs, drained the tank and all that, new plugs, etc etc and now it will fire up, idle fine, but on top end it still spits and spudders. I have owned 2 strokes before, and the only think i can think of, is maybe the pipes are carboned up? He had pulled the stock air box off and replaced it with the pods and outerwares, i took the thing to the shop and they said that is what my problem is, because we are still running stock pipes, and it wont run right with pods on there. I had them go ahead and check complression, which was 125 psi on both cylinders, and had them re-jet it for elevation. Any ideas? Quote
akita8 Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 List everything that is done to the quad and the gentlemen at this forum can probably help you out. Do you know what size jets the dealer put in? Quote
old87shee Posted January 19, 2008 Author Report Posted January 19, 2008 as far as mods, the only things i know he did to it, was install the over rev cdi box, and a new stator, with adjustable timing plate, and a boost bottle. He had to rebuild the top end, due to the fact that the shop he took it to, said it needed it and a lot of other things, turned out the bore was perfectly fine and there wasnt even any wear marks on his stock pistons, however it now has some kind of ceramic coated pistons in it. as far as jets, i have no idea, im running stock carbs, and my elevation in Grand Junction is about 4800 ft. so whatever jets you need for a stock set up at that elevation? akita8 Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 Do you know if the TORS has been removed. I'm not real familier with the 87's and don't even know if they had TORS installed from the factory but if it is installed you might want to try and disconnect the wires to them and try it out. Quote
old87shee Posted January 19, 2008 Author Report Posted January 19, 2008 yeh the T.O.R.S. is still installed Quote
bansheejoel Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 do you know what clip you needle is on? try 3rd clip Quote
notatallhappy Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 It sounds like your main jet is off a little bit, do a W.O.T. check and see if it is lean or rich. The dealer most likely did not do this and just guessed at your main jet. Your banshee has pods on it so you probably need to go up one main size Quote
bansheefreak Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 sounds like same problem as anothet guy on here.. check and make sure slides are in the right carbs if they got reversed it will run like choke is on.. spit and sputter under accel... Quote
old87shee Posted January 20, 2008 Author Report Posted January 20, 2008 its definately running rich, the guy told me that because of the pods, it will never run right, im calling B.S., i know plenty of people with pods on their banshees and they run just fine. but yeh its running rich as hell, i can tell that just by the thick smoke while riding it, and im mixing it 32:1 Quote
old87shee Posted January 20, 2008 Author Report Posted January 20, 2008 also, i forgot to mention, that the last time we took it to the dunes, it over heated the pipes and melted the little rubber grommets that connect the headers to the mid pipe and the ones between the silencers and the mid pipe....which makes me wonder if the exhaust is carboned up, i haven't had a real chance to look at it since this happened, with work and all, its kinda hard to dig into things. I also spoke with Josh, the guy i got the bike from today, and he was telling me that the bike ran exactly like that, before we took it to the shop and they changed out the jets, i don't know if this helps any at all, but figured i might want to throw all this in there Quote
old87shee Posted January 21, 2008 Author Report Posted January 21, 2008 i checked the slides, theyre in the right carbs, any other ideas lol Quote
sa3ood_banshee Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 what do ur plugs look like,(are they wet or dry, whats tha color) sa3ood Quote
old87shee Posted January 22, 2008 Author Report Posted January 22, 2008 they have the usual blackness to them like most two strokes, and are usually wet, not soaking, but moist Quote
inthemail Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 (edited) usual blackness is definitley rich, especially since you said the plugs were new. do you know what a WOT test is? (check top of jetting forum) buy a set of new pipes and get rid of your stockers and i bet it will even out, im willing to bet the pipes get hot because there gummed up or may have had oil in em at one time. so your right there. id like to say welcome to the site, and im glad to let you know you found the right addiction to small engine tweaking, your banshee will either love you or hate you  buy about 6 new plugs and do a proper WOT test and go from there, sounds big time rich and id partially agree with the shop, stock pipes may not work right with pods, thats alot of air and your pipes use resonance to send unburnt mixtures back into the cylinder so without some curvy bling it may either always be rich or lean somewhere. anyone else on here running pods on stockers? Im running my own version of a pod (cut the airbox up and kept the intake part with my filter bolted to it all open around it) and im running 320 mains with 3rd pos needle on FMF pipes. edit* i jetted it when i was 14 tho.... probley why shee blew up fuck only knows.
