Dune season is almost here, so I wanted to do a little more to my shee before the first trip. I ordered a timing plate and it should be here in a couple days. I am wondering where I should set it to for my setup. I will also, hopefully find the time to go get it dyno tuned before the trip, So If you guys would like to guess my horsepower, Ill post up with the results. Here is my mods list.

.040" bore

.030" milled off the head (175 psi compression)

aggressive dune port

stock carbs with k@n pods

vforce 3 reeds

toomey t-5

running 50/50 110 race gas and 91 pump

timing plate will go on this weekend (suggestions on how much timing?)

thanks in advance for any suggestions

Depending on how much porting is done...55 to 60 HP.

If you're gonna dune it most of the time, 7 degrees.

If you're gonna just drag race, shut it down...wait..then drag again, 9 to 10 degrees.

With that much compression and timing run 110 straight race gas, no mixing to be safe.

Pick up some bigger carbs for a little more power, 33PWKs would probably run real nice on that bike.

Thanks for the input guys.

Carbs are definitely next on the list.

Dave, so are you saying more timing will give me more power, but less reliable. I mostly dune the thing with a little hill shooting now and then. I deffinitely want it to be reliable. Do you think +7 is reliable, or should i go +6 to be that much safer

i would start at+ 4 do a plug chop. do a chop every degree + after that.better safe than sorry. a hole in a piston would be a tough lesson. at + 7 on a dune bike , thats alot of heat.

That's exactly what I was thinking...

It's real easy to bump it up from +4 once the plate is installed.

You guys have no faith...

I ran 110, +7 or 9 on my plate and the most advanced curve on my dyna all last year, beat the hell out of it...never a problem. Motor came apart like it was new....

You know I have faith...he's just not running straight 110, and he's not running a cub either. I'm a timing havin' fool on my bike, and I'm spraying it just like it is too (hope I don't regret it)

I'd just rather give advice that's gonna be safe in the long run, I KNOW +4 is safe, but don't want to say go +7 and he melts a piston

just dragging for 4 seconds wide open? or winding out 5 th or 6th up and down big ass sand dunes? each set up is different. my play bikes were always real high strung.+ 4or 5 is plenty of heat for riding all day.better safe than having a catastrophic melt down 3 miles into glamis or wherever.YA HEARD ME GANGWAR?

Rippen around the dunes on my 4 mil for 20 to 30 minutes at a time...

I did note, however....to run straight race gas. I wouldn't chance the compression he has on a mix, let alone with more timing....

I'm just a timing freak...it's all good but plug afficianado...

So Im thinking ill try to get a set of pwk carbs sooner than later. Anyone know where I can get a good deal on them. I suppose I also need

to get new intakes and pods. Do I need a new throttle cable. If anyone has a set of used 33mm pwks that you want to get rid of let me know.

It's been dyno proven that once you get to +4, there's not really any power gains above that. with that said, there is more response with more timing advance. A bike with +7 or +8 timing advance is snappier and more responsive than one at +4, but as said, no reason to screw around with it at first, see how it runs at +4 and see how you like it, then add more if desired. for the record, I like +7 to +8.

Scott...I'm not sure what dyno you saw that one, but there are PLENTY of people on here that will disagree with that.

It all depends on the setup and motor type/state of tune.

I know of two people that went from 4 to 11 or 12 and literally saw 4 or 5 MPH and an extra tenth or TWO by bumping the timing.

That's not dyno...that's real world....

Now on a bone stock motor with no porting, you're probably right. This guy has a ported motor...so, I beg to differ. I'd bet it shows on a dyno and on the strip/dunes.
