paulnyw Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 ok i bought a 02 which was shifting hard so i put in a new clutch and modded shift star but it is still shifting hard as in wont shift underpower but if i let off and pull the clutch, and coast then it will shift my questions are will a grooved clutch basket do this? and the adjustment by the the shift arm will this cause hard shifting if it is out of adjustment? and if so what are the specs to adjust it by? thanks paul Quote
fastbanshee8 Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 A grooved clutch basket will cause hard shifting. It won't allow the clutch plates to seperate completely, which means some power is still going to your transmission. Maybe someone else will chime in, about the shift shaft adjustment, because I have never had to mess with mine. Quote
Bansh-eman Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 normally if your shift shaft is out of adjustment, you wont be able to shift under power or not under power. either way it wont turn the drum... sounds like your basket is grooved. Quote
paulnyw Posted August 18, 2007 Author Report Posted August 18, 2007 ok so i replace my clutch basket today it shifts a little bit better but still wont shift to great do you think i should try the fast shift shaft mod or just bite the bullet and replace the tranny? Quote
shee rips Posted August 18, 2007 Report Posted August 18, 2007 i wouldnt go and rebuild the whole tranny. i dont think that would fix the problem. i would maybe try adjusting the shift shaft before you do anything drastic. Quote

Bansh-eman Posted August 18, 2007 Report Posted August 18, 2007 are you sure its your shift shaft and not your forks? normally the shift shaft will not allow it to shift for shit at any time because it does not catch the notches on the star Quote
paulnyw Posted August 18, 2007 Author Report Posted August 18, 2007 thats the thing i dont really know i am just replacing the easy things right now and hoping for the best but i am starting to lean towards there being bigger issues so now my question is is it possible to just replace the forks or do i need to do the whole tranny over? Quote
Bansh-eman Posted August 18, 2007 Report Posted August 18, 2007 no you can do just the forks... when you open the cases up the fork ride on the shift drum, and are held in place by two two dowel rod type things make sure that all three of them are good and theres no bends or nicks in any of them. Quote
paulnyw Posted August 18, 2007 Author Report Posted August 18, 2007 ok does this sound like the most likely culprit? i have eliminated just about every other thing- shift star, clutch, inner clutch hub and clutch basket so that pretty much only leaves the forks right? Quote
Bansh-eman Posted August 18, 2007 Report Posted August 18, 2007 it sounds likely, but i can not say for sure thats it...you said you replaced the plates right? how bad did the old ones look? Quote
paulnyw Posted August 18, 2007 Author Report Posted August 18, 2007 they didnt look terrible but the oil did look like something was up with the clutch and the basket was pretty grooved the bolt that adjusts the shift shaft what does that actually do? i was messing with that a little bit not really sure if it is right or not i know you said that probably not the cause but i am just trying to cover all my bases before i tear the motor down Quote
FasterThanU90 Posted August 18, 2007 Report Posted August 18, 2007 check ur shift forks. 3 b`s Bent Burnt Broken Quote
paulnyw Posted August 19, 2007 Author Report Posted August 19, 2007 well i dont know what to think now i adjusted the clutch a little and took it out for a ride it seems to shift a lot better now the only time it seems to shift hard is between 2nd and 3rd but it isnt to bad is it possible one fork is bad? Quote
Bansh-eman Posted August 19, 2007 Report Posted August 19, 2007 (edited) sounds like your forks or possibly your shift drum Edited August 19, 2007 by Bansh-eman Quote
