fox_forma Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 (edited) Just curious how hot some of your pipes tend to get? My Dirt bike, 99 RM250 runs great but the pipe doesn't seem to get really hot, yeah it gets hot but nothing like the heat I can feel off my shee's pipes. I'm just curious how normal it is for our pipes to really heat up. My bikes runs pretty good, my plugs looks fine but with the heat disperse it has me thinking I'm running lean still somewhere up top. There is no coolant leaking as well from what I can tell. Does this sound like the right area for jetting? 02 Stock motor Greydon proline pipes and silencers +4 timing Dual PODS I'm at 320 main, I forget the needle but I'm on the 4th clip down out of 6 of them, stock pilots and air screws turned out 1.25. I live in AZ so its pretty hot hear now but even when the temps weren't up as high it still seemed odd to me. I Like I said the bike seems to run pretty good but it really seems to give off way more heat than any of my other shee's I have owned and all those had more work done to them. peak-j Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 Mine doesn't get real hot, don't get me wrong but they will burn if you lay your hand on them, checking with a guage I think they were around 110- 125 degrees. I can't remember for sure. I know the chrome will affect the reading also. As long as you plugs and everything look good and your not overheating, keep on running. Quote
RagunCajun Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 My left leg touched my left pipe for like 3 seconds before the burning feeling hit my brain. Made a nice burn. The same thing happen to my bud on my 250. Both run fine. It's exaust, IMO it's gonna be hot. Quote
WALLACE84 Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 I wouldnt be worried about it. My shees have always put out more heat then my dirt bikes Quote
fox_forma Posted July 16, 2007 Author Report Posted July 16, 2007 I just found it odd the difference between the two. My pipes seem to get extremely hot, I have burnt myself before on pipes but I swear you can just feel how hot these are once you get a little close to them. Just seeing if anyone elses are like this Quote
XxMeltIcexX Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 110-125 degrees? Somethings not right there my man, thats very cold for exhaust  Quote
fastrthnu Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 If mine is too rich they will burn just as hot as if its to lean. I mean really hot really fast. As long as your head pipe right where it connects to the exaust port isnt bluing, it shouldnt be to off. If its starts to get hot to the point it blues, somethings makin it to hot. Keeping the motor at a constant high rev and not moving fast will do it to. Like 50 donuts in a row. Quote
fox_forma Posted July 16, 2007 Author Report Posted July 16, 2007 Yeah i know about air flow and everything and I'm pretty good with jetting bikes but I just dont ever recall any of my other banshee's or any other 2t's I've owned reaching that type of heat range with the pipes. I'm going to tweak a few things and see what happens just to be on the safe the side. Gonna do any plug chop as well when I get the time tomorrow or this week. Quote
peak-j Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 Checked mine just a little bit ago after about three full throttle runs down the road, 186 degrees by the cylinder and 118 degrees right by my leg. I have no bluing on the pipes. This is just after I shut it down. Quote
csrmel Posted July 16, 2007 Report Posted July 16, 2007 (edited) if you pipes arnt blueing then youre rich. its that simple. my toomeys are blue from the exhaust port to 8 inches up the pipe. alot of people say my bike is lean. its got perfect compression and i havent blown the engine. ive never seen a spec of aluminum on the plugs. thing is most people jet their bikes way rich. so rich you can hear them 4 stroke at certain throttle positions. if youre worried about lubrication put more oil in the gas. yamaha does spec 20:1 to 25:1 for the banshee afterall. the few exceptions i could possibly see are alcohol bikes and drag bikes. alcohol bikes i do not believe the exhaust ever gets hot enough to blue the pipes. and it seems to me drag bikes only run under power for a handfull of seconds. people not enough time to blue the pipes. look guys im no expert on this but hell toomey themselves say that if you pipes are not blue then you are rich. i just read that the other day on their site. fox_forma Posted July 17, 2007 Author Report Posted July 17, 2007 my toomeys get so fricking hot..... burn my legs with out even touching them... defantly dont wear shorts thats pretty much how my greydon prolines are, just doesnt seem right. Quote
Dinner Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 If I am at low speed I can feel the heat off my pipes a few inches away. Around corners I occasionally hit them from hugging the quad and I have a new scar on my left leg...only touched as long as it took my brain to realize, holy shit i'm being burnt, lol My shee has been like this for 2 years...hasn't blown up or failed yet...and it's even on the rich side Quote
grounded Posted July 17, 2007 Report Posted July 17, 2007 Agreed with a properly tuned bikes pipes turning blue, Did you rejet when you moved to AZ? I think we're at 1200- 1300 ft . Oh , I have the same dirt bike you do , and that exhaust runs every bit as hot as the banshees. http://www.bikepics.com/pictures/169336/ Quote

Oh , I have the same dirt bike you do , and that exhaust runs every bit as hot as the banshees. http://www.bikepics.com/pictures/169336/ Yeah i re-jetted once I got here and that was mainly due to the new filter set-up since I am running PODS with no box. I was at a 280 main, stock pilot and stock needle on 3rd clip before the PODS, then I changed needles and bumped up to 320 mains with the PODS. My RM gets hot but nothing like my shee pipes. Nice RM250 by the way, what kinda rear tire you running? Looks like the same as mine, a Maxxix c600. Quote
