so today i was taking my banshee out for a cruise and when i went to go start it, it wouldnt start. But the thing is it ALWAYS starts first to second kick. Finally i get too tired after sitting in 95 degree weather and tow it behind my brothers quad and try to jump it and it still wouldnt fire. Finally after 3 times up and down the road it fired, so i let it warm up and it seems fine so i go to the coldasack and drag my brother on his 450 and i always win, but this time im barely keeping up and i look behind me and all i see is smoke so im like uh oh.....i pull into my driveway and give it some gas and white smoke it pouring outta my right silencer so i look down and my pipe is litterly red hot

What can it be?

Also if im gunna rebuild it i wanna put after market stuff on it. I was wondering what is a good set up for trails and would be reliable?

pull your right plug and see if there is aluminum on it, if so time for a rebuild.. you might need to have it bored if the cylinder is bad. as far as a reliable trail motor, you can either slap some new pistons in it or you can get a woods/trail port from Jeff aka (fasttoys), or from jim at passion racing. both do really good port work.

i just got off the phone with one of my friends whose a mechanic and hes were taking it apart tommorow depending on whats wrong ill probly send it to one of the guys listed for the porting and ill slap some aftermarket parts on it......but ill keep you posted

BTW: Im new to the 2 strokes so everything you guys are saying i appreciate it, even if it sounds a little obvious to you guys, but im a fast learner so ill definitly get used to working with it.

^ my silencer with the white residue from the smoke

And this is my pipe that was once polished and now ruined :banghead:

Super high pipe temps generally only come from lean conditions and detonation. I am thinking either your water pump went south or your main jet is plugged on that side. The pic is not super clear but that residue in the silencer looks like aluminum. I am expecting a powdered mess inside. Pull it down, it is over. You key in finding the culprit will be if the LH side is ok. That would mean either a major air leak on the RH side or a plugged main jet. Both sides would probably be the water pump.

Also i just put my airbox lid back on for the first time cause it seemed a tad rich.....could this be PART of the problem? cause i had my 450 run lean and it did the same thing with the hot exhaust but this is a totally different story with the extreme amounts of smoke coming out only the right side and only my right pipe is turning colors

Adding the lid will only make it run fatter. The 450s will normally show a glowing pipe at near idle because of the way the booster jet works in the carb. No biggy on the thumpers but a damn big deal on a banshee. No question, it is toast. Open it and let us know. Change?? Piston have a new hole? Kinda like rolling to dice in Vegas but knowing your odds are, well, you don;t have any. shit. When they don't start, there is a reason. Dragging them around town is not the best for them.

does your buddy have a leakdown tester?

You went lean somewhere and if you rebuild it and its still sucking air somewhere its just gonna do the same thing that happened this time.

what did the smoke smell like?

Crank seal went bad?

Start with pulling your plugs and see if their are metal flakes.

Make sure you remove your head in numbered sequence backward or you can chance warping your head.

I made a mistake when i said the rich and lean comments before it was just a long night with friends  ......But i pulled the plug and it really doesnt have metal on it at all, but in a little when i pull the head off and everything i will let you know what happened. I'll also post some pics with a good clear camera just so you guys could see what it might be.
