Last fall the bike ran great last trip out and it wasn't untill several weeks later that I found I had no spark.. Going against my gut feeling I pulled the motor out for the winter build-up and figured I would track down the problem later.. The other day I tested the stator and it read like 117 on one set of terminals and nothin on the other.. Ok cool, buddy had a used stator, checked it and it read 116 on one set and 16 on the other set.. Slap it on.. Kick her a few times and it sounds like there is no spark.. WTF, checked the stator again and now it reads 116 on the one set and jack shit on the other.. So now Iam really like WTF! Anyone know what the hell the deal maybe???

id say if it ran fine before and now acting up .. i would look for a pinched or un hooked wire.. since the biuld things might have been missed.. well hope you find it.. look back by the rear make sure all wires are good and shit

well thats weird... maybe just a coincidence? try it one last time and if it does it again work from there.. could just be a coincidence...

Checked it many times.. Even pulled it all back apart and still ohms out the same..

Check for shorted wires in your harness, make sure the tors is deactivated and unhooked.

No tors on the bike but it does look like Iam gonna have to dig in the harness..

yea id say check all your wiring really well. might have something pinched or rubbing or who knows. have you cut your harness down at all?

Havn't really made any changes at all to the harness.. Atleast not to the ignition side.. Have dinked with the light crap but that was quite a while ago as well..

Just don't understand why that stator seemed be be checking out good.. Put it on and kick it around and now it reads like its shot.. :banghead:

What timing plate do you have jamie? How did you test the stator the first time? on or off the the bike? how the second time ? Your fly wheel does it rattle? grounds are they free of paint/pc?

Generally speaking, a grounded or disconnected stator will not go bad. What will kill a stator is have some wires switched around, which doesn't sound like it's the case here. The other thing about stators is that they can test good on the bench, but when they are torqued down when installed they will test bad if they have a broken winding. I don't think that it is that far fetched to have encountered two failed stators. :geek: :geek:

Flywheel is good.. The timing plate is the adjustable I got from Jeff and I first tested it off the bike, then tested it on after I again found no spark.. Pulled it back out last night and found that it was reading bad.. I have a digital volt meter that I tested it with.. Grounds and all that type of stuff hasn't changed..

That makes some sence there.. I talked to Mike from Ricky stator about the problem and he said he didn't think anything else would have wiped it out like that.. Basicly said it s possible to encounter two bad ones like I have and shouldn't be overly worried about throwing another on to try it out.. Nice and helpfull guy to talk to.. I got a buddy with another stator Iam gonna try tonight so hope that solves it there.. Anyone have a good sorce to pick up decent stators at a decent price?

Thanks for all the help so far fellas!

I cant speak from experience, but from what everybody tells me, stock stators are the only way to go. So if you need to get one, I would look at a stocker.

I have always used Rick Stator's setups for replacement parts, never had an issue that I didn't cause myself.

I've got mixed feelings on this. My Ricky stator ...uh...stator was fantastic all last year (stock Watts, I don't use lights), first time out on my new 10mil, it went sour. RS warrantied it...I'll have it back tomorrow.

So...read a lot about their failures, Mikey had a shit ton of problems with his. My bro that builds a lot of motors SWEARS by the stock stators....at a used price. new they are OUTRAGEOUS...

I think you should redo your ground...maybe even make an extra ground where the old TORS brain mounted. That's where mine was grounded last year. Make sure you scrape paint, get a good ground.

I'd retrace ALL of the wiring harness, check your plugs for loose wires or burnt ends...

Two bad stators in a row? Could happen... Look at a wiring diagram, see where the shorted side leads to on each pair of wires...

Best of luck buddy. Electrical problems are the worst I tell ya...

Well I decided to try another stock stator.. Put it on and it fired FIRST kick and sat idle perfectly.. Thanks god its nothing deeper in the system afterall... Thanks for all your guys input!

I got my RS Stator back in the mail yesterday...Rippen. Put it on..and whaddya know...spark.

Shit, my pickup gap was at like .045 (I just loosened the pickup and forgot to set gap, and it still sparked...LOL)

So...I will be bringing me a spare to Memorial Weekend...

I did have to shave some of the plastic off the pickup to get the correct gap, it was hitting the flywheel magnets...
