I am currently getting a new motor put in my golf cart! I have a 1990 EZ-GO. It had a crappy 2-stroke motor that had a cracked case and no power! I bought a brand new Briggs V-twin 18hp 4-stroke motor to put in it. I am paying a friend to do everything. He called me today and said he ran into a big problem. The way he is going to mount the motor up to the belt driven rear differential, the golf cart would only go in reverse!!! He didn't notice this until he was about to bolt the motor up. The motor only drives in one direction and the diffrenential does not have fwd and rev. The only thing we can think of is to find a differential with fwd and rev. Does any body have any ideas of what else we can do or where I can pick up a used golf cart differential for cheap! My budget is completely out so I need something really really cheap! All you custom golf cart, buggie, truck guys, please help!

Thanks!

you could rig up a gear on the output of the motor that meshes with a gear on another shaft then run the belt off the other shaft. that will switch the fwd power into reverse

oh yeah another thing i was thinking about when laying in bed last night was if you turn the motor 180* and mount it on the opiste side of the frame you where going to it would turn the way you need it to. this will only work if you have enough room to mount it differently

redo the motor mounts and turn them 180* then the drive should be from the opposite side and effectively spin the opposite direction.

unless im missing something? The EZ-Go's have a fir amount of room under the seat from what I remember.

We thought of that idea too. Right now, the shaft out of the motor that the belt is connected too, is behind the motor. If we turned the motor around 180, the shaft would now be in front of the motor and could not be connected to the belt. Unless, we mounted the motor on top of the axle/differential. It would put a lot of wheight on the rear end and would be sticking out of the golf cart! It would look really bad! Unfortunetly, that idea would not work out!

I thought about this idea too. The only thing with this, both of the gears would have to be really strong to be able to support the torque. What kind of gears do you recommend? Remember, I aint got NO cash flow$$$.

Dude if it has a solid rear end with leaf springs just flip the axel and bam it drives forward lol...... easy fix

i never even thought of that. there you go. may gain some lift too depending on what you do with the spring pads.

It doesn't have leaf springs. It has shocks and springs. If I flipped the axle, the differential would be facing the back of the golf cart right?

no...... man flip the axle left to right.... the right tire on the left, and the left tire on the right side.

yeah take the axle rotate it 180* so the drive is at the back and then twist the axle so the drive is at the front again.

I know what you guys are saying! If I did that, then the differential would be upside down and it would leak oil like a SOB! Look at the rear end of a truck, it is pretty much the same thing! I'll try to get some pictures soon and maybe that will help out a little bit! Thanks for everyones input! Lets keep trying and we will figure something out!

Why would it leak. Just weld up the hole for the breather and drill a new on on the other side. Cut the brackets off the axle and reweld them on the proper side. People with derby cars do this all the time. That way they have 2-3 reverse gears and 1 forward gear.

The only thing you would really have to worry about would be starving the pinion bearing of oil. Most pinions are on the lower side of the axle. When you filip it will be on the top. Just run the oil level higer in the axle.
