fox_forma Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 I started pulling my shee apart to get ready for paint and I can not get the damn A-arms off. I cant get the ball joints out of the spindles for the life of me. I have tried hitting the spindle with a BFH to break it loose but nothing. It will not budge. Next I figured if I could pull the whole A-arm set up off at once maybe I could find another way to get the arms off the spindles but I cant even get the damn A-arm bolt to come out. I thought maybe it was dry and seized inside of the cross tube but it looks well greased. ANy other ideas on how the hell to get these bolts/joints out? They need to come out ASAP and I'm running out of ideas. I have never had this much trouble before with something like this. Normally its a 10min job but this is going on a few hours Quote
RNBRAD Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 I'd use a heat gun, heat the outside up pretty good. Get a piece of steel like rebar or another big bolt (I actually use a socket extension) to place on the threaded end and whack the piss out of it with a BFH. Be carefull not to flatten or damage the end, then you will never get it out. Quote
ohiobanshee Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 A piece of brass will not damage the bolts. Some parts stores carry brass punches. Quote
fox_forma Posted March 4, 2007 Author Report Posted March 4, 2007 i'll try the heat gun idea, I normally just use a small propane thingy but figured it would damage the joints on the a-arms since they arent replaceable. Oh and I have been whacking the shit out of it from the one end. I put the nut on the bolt and have been just whaling on it trying to get it free, but nothing is working. Hopefully the heat gun trick works. Tomorrow is my only day off to really get the bike prepped for paint and this stupid ass problem is really holding me up. Quote
RNBRAD Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 heat guns are great for wide dispersion of heat and more controlled without getting damaging localized heat. I think you need some heat but I wouldn't risk using a torch on it. Quote
375hp banshees Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 hit the side also (spindle, where the ball joint shaft goes through ) Quote
fox_forma Posted March 4, 2007 Author Report Posted March 4, 2007 hit the side also (spindle, where the ball joint shaft goes through ) yeah been doing that as well, only thing I can think of is maybe it has to do with the previous owner rattle canning the whole damn bike and it has stuff jammed up. I'm going to get some new impact sockets tomorrow so maybe with the a-arm bolt I can get the impact on it and make it break free from whatever is locking it up. I'm still stumped on the spindles though Quote
yamaha04 Posted March 4, 2007 Report Posted March 4, 2007 i had the same problem with mine. o just quit screwing around with the little taps and i put the nut back on the bolt as you said and give it hell. pop right out for me lol now the arm top bolt was a bitch but did come out. you could also try a balljoint fork. im not sure if they make them small enough but that tool is what they are for pops them ball joints out like butter Quote
fox_forma Posted March 4, 2007 Author Report Posted March 4, 2007 the a-arm bolt will barely even turn, I want to hit it harder but I dont want to screw up the threads, but it looks like it may be my only choice to really whack the shit out of it and see what happens Quote
fox_forma Posted March 4, 2007 Author Report Posted March 4, 2007 still not working out for me. I got the damn spindles finally off but the F'in top A-arm bolt is shit now. It got all warped on the one end and then the nut wouldnt come off, end up cutting it off but I still cant get the bolt to come out the opposite side. What looks like is happening is the front a-arm mount is not allowing the bolt to come out. I'm about to just cut the whole a-arm but I dont want to. The top a-arm is the only thing left and it just wont budge, what else can I do? Quote
375hp banshees Posted March 5, 2007 Report Posted March 5, 2007 yeah been doing that as well, only thing I can think of is maybe it has to do with the previous owner rattle canning the whole damn bike and it has stuff jammed up. I'm going to get some new impact sockets tomorrow so maybe with the a-arm bolt I can get the impact on it and make it break free from whatever is locking it up. I'm still stumped on the spindles though If you put the impact on it & keep spinning it it should free up & if you get some help 1 on the impact & 1 on the other end tapping it towards the impact at the same time. you can take the grease fitting out & spray pb in the hole. Mullet Man Posted March 5, 2007 Report Posted March 5, 2007 If you put the impact on it & keep spinning it it should free up & if you get some help 1 on the impact & 1 on the other end tapping it towards the impact at the same time. you can take the grease fitting out & spray pb in the hole. yep, but dont play nice with it. whack the shit out of it whiles its spinning! also, get seom PB Blaster (spray penetrating fluid). soak it. let it work for a couple minutes Quote
fox_forma Posted March 5, 2007 Author Report Posted March 5, 2007 already went through a can of PB blaster on this fuckin bolt. This is the only thing stopping me from getting this damn frame sprayed and it has me heated. I'll keep trying the PB shit but so far it hasnt done anything. I have also been whacking the shit out of it from the opposite end when the impact is on it and nothing at all. Quote
ohiobanshee Posted March 5, 2007 Report Posted March 5, 2007 Last resort cut both ends of the bolt flush with the frame mounts, than sperad one mount out alittle till it clears the bolt, your a arm will come out, than you can drive the rest of the bolt out. Quote
fox_forma Posted March 5, 2007 Author Report Posted March 5, 2007 not to sure if I want to go that route just yet. Still messing with a few other ways to see if I can manage to break it free so it comes out. Off topic of this situation but is it normal for a stock shee to not have a masterlink from the factory? I was about to finish pulling off the swinger and noticed I dont have one. I wonder how many more surprises there will be. Quote
