doo600 Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 hey, guy's I'm new to this site. glad i found it. I just bought my first banshee sold the snowmobile for it anyways i tore it down to the frame and redid it my way did some small mods reeds,30mm carbs bored 10 over with prolite's fmf gnarly k&n clamp on.went with plus 4 on timing runs great but i have been reading about a shift star not sure what that is or what it does for you just looking for some input thanks Quote
ToomeySheeLE Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 Helps you shift easier.. Until you need to tear into your bottom end its not worth your while. Splitting the cases to change your shift star doesn;t seem to make much sence. Quote

boonman Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 You don't have to split the case to change the shift star. What you do have to do is pull the clutch cover off. Which to do, you would have to drain the oil, and coolant. If you're careful with the gasket, and reclaim the fluids, it won't cost ya nothin' to pull it apart. Quote
moneybags Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 IMO you should do the buillet watter pump, shift star mod and 3 Hevey duty spings at the same time. That is what I did plus a Pro shift kit from ebay. Shifts so smooth. Quote
BigRed350x Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 If you are going to the trouble of pulling your clutch cover and pulling the clutch and everything off to get to the star, might as well replace the cushions on your clutch basket, put in the billet impeller, change out the clutch if needed, shift star mod... and I wouldn't try and save the gaskets on any of the surfaces, just replace it with a new unit. They aren't that expensive and will save you the worry of a leak later on down the road. Also, be sure to replace the o-ring on your coolant line if you pull that cover. Its a good idea to put a fresh o-ring on there if you haven't changed it out in a while... JMO. - Jared Quote

Hilarious Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 well i all ready put a new vito clutch kit in it with all five springs what is the cushions you are speaking of The cushions are underneath the clutchbasket and ring gear. Did you install an aftermarket clutchbasket? There is really no way to replace them unless you drill out the rivets on the stocker. You usually replace the cushions when you install an aftermarket billet clutch basket. Quote
ALTVATER Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 i just put a mod shift star in my bike about 1 hr ago. it should help shift just like everyone has said. but it is very simple and u don't have to split the cases. lmao whoever said that must be thinking of something else. if i was guessing it took me about 15 min work time to change out. but when u do it make sure u dont lose the pin that goes through it. i droped mine and it took forever to find it. anyway they r like $32 from fast and u can do it urself. i think it is a good investment...JMO Quote
Animalman294 Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 Not only does it make shifting easier, it also alows you hit nuetral really easy while the bike is running. Before teh mod I would have to shut my bike down to shift into nuetral, but now I can do it with the bike running........... Quote
westexgt Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 What is exactly done to the shift star itself? And does anyone have any pics of modded one vs. a none? Kevin Quote
sykoman Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 What is exactly done to the shift star itself? And does anyone have any pics of modded one vs. a none? Kevin well the tips of the shift star are rounded do make it easier to shift and the neutral "detent" is backcut to make it easier to find neutral while running..... I don't have n e pics but there are some good ones if you doo a search.... I just did mine and so far I love it..... Quote
MDS2106 Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 (edited) I don't have any pics of a normal shift star, but here is a couple of pics of the modded star that was in my banshee. When I installed the shift pro kit,I went back with a new star.Looks like someone either used a belt sander or a grinder and just rounded off the edges.
