You need to take a puppy that age outside a lot. Every half hr if possible. Make sure you make a huge deal of it when they go outside..big praises. Do you cage train? That will help w/everything. Some people say it is cruel, but that dog will not go in his cage. My dog see's his cage as a safe place. She has never gotten in trouble for anything she has ever done in there. When she would have an accident, we would put her in her cage for 20 to 30 minutes. Then take her straight outside. If she go's outside she is alowd to hang out again. If she won't go, then we put her back in her cage. Keep repeating until she goes. They'll get the idea pretty quickly.

As far as chewing goes, if you don't have the time to constantly supervise them while young, it will be hard to stop. When they start chewing on something, tell them no and immediately give them something they are allowed to chew on. Tell them how good they are once they start playing w/the toy. Again, if you don't have the time to watch them, then you can't catch them in the act and is harder to punish a dog and actually be doing any good. Dog will just think you are crazy. When our pups are that young, they are in their cage if we can't watch them. Some pups up to about 6 to 8 months, but don't usually have problems after that. One more thing that has helped our dogs chew on what they are supposed to is put all their toys in a basket or someting like that and always keep them in that location. They will get to know that there, and only there is where they can grab things to chew on and play with. Just don't accidentally drop something you don't want them to chew into the basket......I know from experience.

I'm not in any way saying these are the only ways to train a dog, but they've worked for me. All the time people tell me how well my pit bull is behaved.

You can also buy this spray that you spray all over stuff and they wont chew it. I used it and my dog would sometimes still chew, so Id give him a lil shot in his mouth when he munching on something he was'nt supposed to and he'd stop. To this day if I pull that bottle out he runs. I think its called bitter apple.

My dog used to chew every and anything electronic. He chewed all my ps2 stuff,my remotes,my dam girls dance dance revalution dance pad thing that cost like 250.00,tons of sheep skin slippers, you name he chewed it. Now he just wants to chew other dogs lol. Rich

put tabassco (sp) sause all over everything, thatll put a fire in his ass :flamewar: my dad did it to the sat wire on the houase b/c mom's new lab chewed the wires out of the wall. dog quit chewing real quick

You also may try some cian (sp) pepper on what ever its chewing on and they think twice about chewing on ot once they figure out that everything besides their toys makes their mouth burn. I've also heard of people getting spray bottles with vinigar or ammonia in them doing the same process...................

i tried the hot stuff, no luck... turns out he likes it

if that doesnt work, call the Dog Whisperer and be on TV for about 15min

lol, no i was joking.

Ceasar Milan, the 'dog whisperer', is the truth.

thats how you master dogs, have too dominate them but not brutally. its all a heirarchy(sp?), in K9 mentality.

If this is your first pitbull do yourself a favor and go to www.pitbullforum.com . Everything you ever wanted or will ever need to know about your pitbull is there. Trust me pitbulls are great loyal companions but can be a handfull at times. If you dont know what to look for as far as temperment, obedience, heath issues, Feeding please reference that pitbull site they are very helpful. I have a pitbull that I rescued and hes the best dog ive ever had but Id have been lost without that site.

And please take care of that pup and if he ever starts biting nip that shit in the bud asap because they are very strong and powerful and can be dangerous if you let it rule you. Let it know right away who is boss. This may sound mean because hes just a little cute pup at the moment but they grow faster than you can imagine and they dont stay small and cute forever. I got my pit at 8 weeks as well . A vet told me he would get no bigger than 40 lbs and 18 inches tall. Kane just turned 1 yr old and hes 30 inches tall and 85 lbs with 6 months left of growing time. I was very stern with him for the first 4 months of his life and hes very well behaved. I have a friend that was very lazy and didnt work with his pup and just let her run wild. Shes bitten 2 children and attacked several dogs.

Another thing. Pitbulls are dog aggressive which means if he is not the only dog in your house you need to be very careful when he matures. And never ever walk him off leash in public. They get a bad enough rap in the media already!

There is a lot of good info in this thread.

I have been cage training my pit ever since she came into my house. Whenever we're not home, she's in her cage. She just turned a year old and she'll walk in her cage and hang out on her own; it's like a den for them. Once she has proven to us that she can be trusted in the home unsupervised, then we'll start leaving her out when we go to work, etc.

The key to controlling chewing is making sure they have plenty of toys, I highly recommend the Kong toys...my dog can chew on that for hours and not mess it up  Like bansheefreak said, when you see them chewing on something they're not supposed to, tell them no immediately then hand them one of their toys; they'll catch on....The stuffed animal toys are fun for them because they can rip them to shreds, but be careful with those, if they eat the stuffing, you'll be pulling it out their butt when they poop. Nothing worse than seeing your dog run around with a dingleberry and they can't do anything about it, you have to pull it out...LMAO, unless you want them coming in your house like that

For housebreaking your dog, anytime mine would pee or poop on the floor (amazingly mine only pooped once in the house), I would pick her up and rub her nose all in it while telling her no, then take her outside and set her in the grass. Took me two weeks to train her that way...she didn't like having her nose rubbed in it at all!!! Definitely praise them a lot when they go outside on their own.

I also recommend not letting your dog get on the couch or furniture when they're a puppy. I believe it helps to teach them boundaries when they're young, it's helped mine to distinguish what's hers and what's mine. Get your dog their own bed to lay on, they'll learn that it is their couch to sit on, like you have your couch...

This is what I use as a quick treat for when mine is good, or I'm training her....she absolutely loves it, she'll do whatever I ask her to if this kong stuffin is involved (she likes the peanut butter one best). I use this once, then praise her without, and so on...that way she doesn't know when she gets the treat, and eventually I'll ween her off this and my praise alone will be sufficient for her...I'll just squirt a little of this stuff on my finger and let her lick it off as a treat

This is the kong toy I got for mine, they also have kong rubber bones that you can put biscuits in the ends of them. For the regular kong toys, I'll fill them up with dog biscuits and my dog will have a great time trying to get them out, and it'll keep them occupied for a while...and it praises them in itself for chewing on their toy.

Definitely check out the dog whisperer...if for nothing else, he'll point out things you'd never think of on your own, and you'll learn what to look for in your dogs behavior, so you can correct them before they do something wrong, and prevent a situation altogether.

Pits are extremely loyal dogs, and they are hungry for attention and affection. If you train them properly, you'll have one of the best dogs you can imagine. Be patient, pits can be very frustrating going through their puppy phase

Sorry for the novel, I just enjoy passing on what I've learned and what works for me...the more well trained pits there are in the world, the better their rep will become, so I hope!!

Just remember, the cable bill will skyrocket when you have to buy new remotes every week for 3 months.....

And moles make a loud crunch when all their bones break....

If it ever ingests something harmfull, get a turky baster and give it 2-3 tablespoons of Hydrogen peroxide.. 5 minutes later everything in it's stomach will be on the ground

Play biting is ok when its a pup but just make sure you draw the line as to whats playing and whats too rough. He will learn fast. If he bites down too hard, immediatly give him your No command and stop playing with him . Totally ignore him and eventually he will get it that if he bites too hard the fun is over. My dog will growl and open his mouth when we are playing. But he will not let one tooth touch my skin. If for some reason his teeth touch me he drops right down and puts his head down because he has learned that it isnt allowed.
