I was looking at getting some better lighting for the night time dune runs. I know they run on DC power, and the stator puts out AC. My question is what all do we have to do to run them. I tried Trail techs site but could not find a complete definate answer. I am running the 200watt stator already.

You will have to convert to dc power, run an inverter I think thats what its called. You will also need a battery os cap as well and float the ground in the stator. Email tech support and they will help you out. I was thinking of doing yhr same thing

You have to do a DC conversion. If your going to try this use a trail tech voltage regulator/rectifier.

 

Here is a link explaining how to. Big Red has tried it and couldnt get the DC conversion to work right. Kept on buring up stators. You might pm him to see what he tried it with. Maybe the newer stators and trail tech voltage regulator.

Thanks, I'm pretty sure you can run a Cap instead of a battery also. I'm gonna call Trail Tech tomorrow.

yep you can. I though that if i ever did a dc conversion i would just make my own battery. I would use some GP 3700 NiHM sub c cells. Just make a 12 volt cell just like you were making one for an electric rc car. Do two rows of five cells. That way you could just zip ty it to the frame some where. No brackets required. Those cells would have a capacity of 3.7 amp hours. It would be enough that your lights would still stay bright even when idling.

It would be much better on the HIDs to run a battery. A capacitor can supply current for a moment, but if you sit there and idle, it won't keep the voltage up. There will still be fluctuations in the voltage.

I have 4 of them on my ATV, no shit, bright as hell.

 

You will NEED a battery.

 

I run trailtechs big battery, it does ok, but if I'm idle long enough one light will shut off.

 

And I'm running a High output Stator and Flywheel with extra strong magnets.

 

I'm probably going to spring for a higher capacity battery soon. If you want to go cheap I would suggest a 7.2 amp hour from radioshack....

 

Don't forget discharging a lead acid battery can distroy it it only takes once. Although I have done it a few times to mine now and it is still working. I also have a spare just in case.

 

If your going to run 2 lights I would STILL recomend the 7.2 but you can get by with a smaller one for sure since you have a high output stator. Getting the flywheel will help at idle.

I don't know how strong you want your lighting, but I have the PIAA headlights from stator and they are a lot better than the stock ones. I have the stock stator, they are weak at low rpms. Thinking about going with the bigger wattage stator.

check into the night rider hid set.. it comes ready to go battery and lights also includes the switch..i run them with the trail tech bar mount lights and they work awesome..they cost about 500 for the h i d kit with everything you need to mount and run them..even the tools to mount arre included in the kit

Hmmm , I'm not at all interested in adding a battery to my bike. When we go out I spend the most of the trip racing at the hill, so more weight is not the thing for me. I run 55w halogen lights on the bars and in stock location right now, they are bright as hell. I have not had them in the dunes yet. But I think they will be more than enough. But I cant's stand the dimming when off the gas. Oh well its the price we pay to ride the sickest hillshooter out there.
