barely legal racing Posted July 21, 2006 Report Posted July 21, 2006 a guy here from missouri.....very well known for his superior quality, said he'd charge me 400 bucks to fully drag port both my cylinders....he is pretty much the best guy to do this in the state, does this stuff for a living....just wondering if that is expensive..about right or cheap Quote
gipperz Posted July 21, 2006 Report Posted July 21, 2006 Well, you do get what you pay for. does'nt sound to bad to me . I had Jeff at F.A.S.T. do my porting, he's in holton kansas, just the next state over. Good luck. Quote
RIPPEN Posted July 21, 2006 Report Posted July 21, 2006 Far as what I have heard that sounds about right... As I remember I think the average clean-up is 100-150 dune/play 200-300 and a drag 400-500.. As with most it varies from builder to builder or whatever but as I remember thats about how much most charge.. RIPPEN Quote

RIPPEN i would send them to trinity or somewhere but i dont want to be w/o a bike that long, i can take my jugs up there and pick them up a few days later, he live 30 minutes from where i do...kinda convienent...and they say he's the best from around here, he builds some bad ass 1000+ hp cars and trucks and can just talk circles and circles over my head, but i think i'll try it and hope it makes a good improvement....my bike is pushing low 60hp, what should it raise it to be....mid 70's? Don't send them to Shinity! There are plenty of better, bigger builders out there. Jeff at F.A.S.T. has always had good things said about him, I go with K&T, Passion, Patriot, etc etc Quote
96dragbanshee Posted July 21, 2006 Report Posted July 21, 2006 give me the name of the guy in missouri. I live here and can tell you if he is any good. I send all my shit to jeff at F.A.S.T. he is best i know of and reallly good prices. Tell me the name of the guy and i will let you know if he is worth your money. 400 bucks is about right on the price but quality is what you are looking for in the porting not just cheap work by average guy. He did the heads on my dads 347 stroker and did a damn good job, car screams, and my uncle has an 87 monte w/a 454 and 2 250 shots and jim pretty much built the car from top to bottom...all 1200 horses of it Quote
locogato11283 Posted July 21, 2006 Report Posted July 21, 2006 never heard of the dude. i think id send it somewhere else... Quote
racer Posted July 21, 2006 Report Posted July 21, 2006 porting a 4 stroke head is light years behind porting a two stroke jug in terms of how critical it is to have it, well, perfect. id send the jugs out, you get what you pay for and patience is a virtue my friend. Quote

Then you know what you got. Quote

Sounds like he builds V8 motors. If he runs a hot rod shop for four strokes I would ask some questions first. What durations (exhaust and transfer) is he cutting for your drag port motor. What % of bore width is the exhaust going to be widened? This will tell you if he knows what he is doing. Then come back and give us the numbers. For that price I don't think he is cutting any extra ports or welding anything up. Quote
96dragbanshee Posted July 21, 2006 Report Posted July 21, 2006 well being a person from missouri and never heard of Jim evans I would be sending the damn motor to Jeff in Kansas. doing a car and doing a four wheeler is not the same. Sure he may build hella good cars. Now your trusting him with a quad you plan to run the shit out of. I would honestly not send to him you could get burned. I agree you should sell your jugs for some cubs so you know what u got. Quote

RILS Posted July 21, 2006 Report Posted July 21, 2006 and get how much out of them with pistons?? and how much would a cub cost me?? If you go with a drag port i agree the cub is the way to go.Im in the process of putting a 4mill cub with a 68mm bore and pistons, cubs, domes, gaskets and a tz bearing to go on my crank is going to run me about $1300.For the stock stoke I guess it could be done for aroun $1000 dollars but after that you start thinking about your clutch, swingarm and other shit to try to handle the power but I think the cub is the best investment as far as cylinders goes.I know these prices seem high but its not hard to end up with a huge amount of money in stk cylinders and be wishing you had went to the cub in the first place.
