87banshee350 Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 hi everyone im new here and was wondering if you could help me, i just bought a 87 banshee, it is hard to start cold, once warm it will start after 2-3 kicks, it wont idle it will die if you dont hold the throttle on a little ways, and a wide open throttle it will pop, and if you rev it up and let off and rev up again it back fires, and the choke dont seem to work, it has new k&n filters, supposively it has a milled head dont know how much is milled, reed spacers, and that all i know that is done to it, does anyone have any suggestions to what could be wrong with it i would appreciate any help Quote
lastlegwarrior Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 The first thing i would do is do a compression test, cause if it still takes 2-3 kicks when it's already warm then i don't think thats normal. But first you are gonna need to find out exactly how much that head has been milled, this will affect compression, of course increase it but your are going to need to know how much compression you should have. My banshee is supposed to have around a 130psi of compression and my altitude is about a 1000ft. with a stock head, will vary depending on altitude. Also it maybe sounds like you might be lean on top, i believe popping is a indication of lean mixture, i'm sure there are other reasons for popping but that seems to be the standard fix. Lastly, what kind of pipes are you running, was just wondering because you said it had new k&n's, so i'm assuming clamp-ons. Anyways, someone correct me if i'm wrong, i believe i was told when i got my banshee that having clamp-on air filters with stock pipes will make your shee run like balls, due to, too much air in and not enough air out. Hope this helps. Quote
BigRed350x Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 We need: Altitude Main Jet Size Pilot Jet Size Needle Clip Postion Compression Clamp on Pod Filters or do you have the plate inside the air box? If you don't know how to find any of those things, do a quick search. This exact question has been answered a LOT of times before. Genrally a pop and a backfire and difficulty starting are jetting problems. Sounds like you are really lean. Don't be runnin that thing until you fix it or you will cause yourself a lot of problems you don't want. Pull your carbs off and check your pilot size, main size, and clip postion. Quote
810darren Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 LISTEN TO BIG RED COMPRESSION TEST FIRST.CHECK PLUGS THEY SHOULD BE A NICE DARK BROWN IF IT IS RUNNING LEAN THEY WILL LOOK VERY LIGHT BROWN OR WHITE.YOU MAY ALSO HAV A FUEL DELIVERY PROBLEM OR AN AIR LEAK.CHECK AND MAKE SURE YOUR CARBS ARE IN SYNC.I HAVE SEEN ONE OF THE SYNC WINDOWS FALL OUT OF THE CARB BEFORE CAUSING AN AIR LEAK WICH IN RETURN A LOSS OF VACCUM.MAKE SURE YOUR NOT MISSING THE LINE THAT CONNECTS THE 2 CARBS IN THE MIDDLE.ALSO IT WOULDNT HURT TO DO A GOOD CLEANING AND INSPECTION ON YOUR CARBS.TAKE OUT YOUR FUEL VALVE FROM THE GAS TANK AND CHECK IT MAKE SURE IT IS OK.FILTER COULD BE PLUGGED UP. 87banshee350 Posted February 19, 2006 Author Report Posted February 19, 2006 well im at 4226 ft, main jets are 280, i dont know where my pilot jets are and i cant find a post here that tells you where there at, and i got two clamp on k&n's no box, dg pipes, and i cant do the compression test till my freind gets here with the tester, oh and i screwed up it does fire first kick after its warm i dont know what i was thinking when i wrote that thanks for your help so far Quote
87banshee350 Posted February 19, 2006 Author Report Posted February 19, 2006 and also with the air filters off it runs great but wont idle, i forgot to wite that Quote
MILO Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 and also with the air filters off it runs great but wont idle, i forgot to wite that 475859[/snapback] i dont' think you want to running it with the filters off at all. you have no filtration of dirt particles and so on, plus you have no air restriction and running even more lean. as far as starting cold, check to see if the carb bowls have been swapped. the one with the 'starter jet' has to be on the choke side. i think the bowls are labeled 1-1, and 1-2. 1-1 needs to be on the choke side. there's also a small crossover tube between the carbs, make sure it is in place. just a small hose connecting the two carbs. FIRST BANSHEE Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 what do your plugs look like? sounds lean up top, fat down low. your pilot jets are in the bottom of carbs by the mains, there the long ones. stock is a 25. idle screws are under the seat on top of that shit on your carbs. about the size of a dime. 87banshee350 Posted February 19, 2006 Author Report Posted February 19, 2006 well the 1-2 was on the left side (choke side), so would that only change the cold start, and that would expane why it seemed like the choke didnt work, and can anyone explain to me how to find and check the pilot jets Quote
810darren Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 your pilot jet is located next to main jet.under the white plastic piece that your main jet goes threw if you take that plastic piece out down that small little hole you will need a real small screwdriver to get it out.stock mains are usually 220 and pilots are #25 Quote
87banshee350 Posted February 20, 2006 Author Report Posted February 20, 2006 well i did some cleaning and swaped the carb bowls, and now it dont pop or backfire but it has a big hesistation when you nail it, and it still has a real hard start when its cold, and i got it to idle but it dont stay the same it changes speed after reving it up, and i took it out and rode it for like 5 min and when i stoped it idled real high, hense the idle speed changing Quote
MILO Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 (edited) check out this clicky and make sure everything is set up ok. and make sure your reeds aren't cracked or anything. http://www.motocross.com/motoprof/moto/mcy...01/carb101.html hope it helps some Edited February 20, 2006 by MILO Quote
87banshee350 Posted February 20, 2006 Author Report Posted February 20, 2006 well from reading other posts, i tried squirting fuel in the carbs, will start right up when cold while doing this, so would that be the piolt jets or fuel straners in the tank Quote
