Meat Posted December 23, 2005 Report Posted December 23, 2005 Im lookin to buy a front bumper and was wondering if I should get an alum bumper or a chromoly one, like a duncan. which type of bumper better protects your frame from hard front end hits ? I guess this shoulda been posted in another forum, I fucked up. mods can move this thread right ? Quote
locogato11283 Posted December 23, 2005 Report Posted December 23, 2005 in all reality ive had some hard hits with bumpers on banshees before and everytime it sheared the upper bolts off..im not sure y it doesnt shear the bottom but the top goes every time. usually there isnt much damage to the bumper, but gettin those fuckin bolts out is a pain in the ass..i really dont think an aluminum or chromoly bumper will protect any better than the other because either way i think its gonna shear the bolts...i ended up just drillin those bolt holes out so that if i did shear another bolt i could just knock the broke part out..not sure if this answers ur question but i can move ur thread for u Quote
BigRed350x Posted December 23, 2005 Report Posted December 23, 2005 I have had the same problem as loco. On my warrior, and my banshee. The warrior bumper would shear all 4 and the banshee would do the top two. You could put a grade 8 bolt in there, but then you risk it not shearing off and bending the frame. In my case the force it took to bend the bumper and finially shear the bolt took up most of the impact and only scratched the plastic. Quote
fast87 Posted December 23, 2005 Report Posted December 23, 2005 i say aluminum, first of all it wont rust like chrome, it matches a lot of banshee parts(billet aluminum), and bends easier than steel, so it should bend before your frame does..i've never hit anything head on hard enough to prove this, but maybe someday... ~Mark~ Quote
PUSH THE THROTTLE Posted December 24, 2005 Report Posted December 24, 2005 I must have had bad luck when I hit the parked car with my shee I had sheared 3 of the bolts. I was running an aluminum DG and it did bend but nothing that couldn't be straightened out, I bought a new one anyway because somebody had a used one for sale at a great price. I still run aluminum and will in the future. Quote
Meat Posted December 25, 2005 Author Report Posted December 25, 2005 mounting bolts shear before the force reaches your frame. I didnt consider that. good info boys, thanks for the insight. I guess I prolly shouldnt use my stainless steel allenhead bolts to mount my bumper ?? Quote
