ozosborne Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 Hi guys, and girls! Just wanted to know how many of you out there ride dirt with no air box lid? After changing to dmc pipes I see they drilled my lid wide open. I called them up and they said it's to get more air in. Then the guy suggested I get a better air filter and remove the lid completely. My worry is that I ride in a lot of mud and water, surely that cannot be too good if it got in? Also, can someone explain to me what a boost bottle does and if it is worth it. I see they are fairly cheap, so if it gains a bit it would be worth it. Quote
NYUK Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 you may want to get a k&n or a foam filter with a waterproof outerwear,if you are running a stock air filter i suggest you do it now.the stock air filter is one of the weak links on a banshee.a boost bottle in my opinion has little to no gain.i run intakes with no spot for a balance tube or boost bottle and see no difference. sheefreak Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 If you ride a LOT of mud and water, I would go w/closed airbox, maybe w/the snorkel removed. If you are going to run it open I would do exactly as NYUK instructed w/a pro-flow adapter. Quote
PUSH THE THROTTLE Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 Boost bottle is mostly useless. On the airbox lid, if you have a proflow adapter take the lid off. When you go riding and you know you'll be in mud and water put the lid back on and duct tape the holes shut. I run all the time with no lid and haven't had any problems, I run the K&N with an outerware and change the filter frequently. Quote
Gargamel Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 I too run without the lid. All I ride is dirt, mud, creek crossing. IMO get a Twinair or other foam filter with a foam outer ware. Never had a problem. On the boost bottle you'll get a 100 that say it dose nothing and 3 that says it's the best. Never tried one for that reason. Quote
ozosborne Posted November 2, 2005 Author Report Posted November 2, 2005 Thanks guys, it sounded like a gimmik. Going to buy the filter soon, also doing the jetting and dyno again so that I can run on high octane racing fuel. Just had the jetting and dyno done with the pipe change, now I have to shell out again. If only I did it that way around the first time. Quote
Ducman Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 The only differece I noticed riding with the lid off is that you have to clean your filter much more often. Cutting a hole in the lid or cutting the rear 2" of the lid off is a good compromise. You should get an adapter plate and filter so you dont duck dirt past the front edge of the stock filter. It just seals against the box with foam in the front of the filter. Quote

redcell43 Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 (edited) I ride with no box at all with duel uni pods filters with outerwears. i ride all dirt and sand. and they seem to work well. But like some other said above if you ride in water or mud you might want to keep the box on. this is my second season running this set up and works good for me. 98bonerSTOCKshee Posted November 2, 2005 Report Posted November 2, 2005 Take the lid off, just don't try making er swim.... K&N with the waterproof outer wear.... And what the reason for the race fuel, you don't need it unless you have raised your compression... Quote
ogre03 Posted November 6, 2005 Report Posted November 6, 2005 I was going to ask about the race fuel too. Unless you are set up to run high compession, etc. A high octaine fuel isn't going to do anything but drain your wallet faster. I run no airbox, with a foam filter, it is pretty well up and out of the way, and I use a pre filter. I ride dirt, but I avoid deeper water crossings and excessive mud because of my filter. I personaly would prefer a K&N in the box with no lid as opposed to the set up I have now, just less to worry about. Quote
