I have a 96 banshee, and i just made a trip to the st. anthony dunes. Anyways here is my problem:

My banshee fires up on the first kick, and it idles perfectly. but on the very top end the left cylinder seems to misfire. So i went and checked my plugs, the were both fine. so then i put the spark plug wire back on and i pulled it right out of the ignition coil. I put it back in and it idles fine, but it still misfires. could it be that my coil is shot? and are the spark plug wires made to come out? banghead

Sounds half-ass kinda like what mine was doing...Try switching the plug wires to see if it causes the other cyl to act the same way--if it does, then I'd say coil. If no, check your reeds, then test the stator, then a new coil; in that order if it were me... :D Let us know what you find.

If you look at where the plug wires attach to the coil, there's a little clip on them so it seems as if they were made to come out. But I can tell you that any stealership or magazine will 99.9% of the time make you buy a whole new coil, I've never seen or heard of anyone just purchasing/replacing plug wires. ;)

Is the bike going to run ok with the plugs switched around?

Yes, won't hurt it at all, you can switch the plug wires without any issues. That outa tell you if it's something on that cyl or the plugwire/coil...if it's still shitting out on the left cyl after switching the plug wires, then I'd check the reeds on that cyl & go from there as I stated in the other post. Of course, if it's the reeds, replace both sides.

I gotta jet, I'll try & stop by tomorrow to see what ya found. ;)

One thing it could be also is a dirty air filter....it's happened to me before (outerwear was clogged). Especially since it only does it on the top end; maybe it's clean enough to provide adequate air for the low end but not enough for when your in the top of the powerband :shrugani: It's a thought...

Is there any way you can describe what this misfire sounds like? Does the cylinder just sound like it's cutting out on you at high RPM's?

It "could" be your coil but I would think if that was the problem then it would be doing it all the time.

Let us know what you find!

ok.... I went out and switched the wires and it still did the same thing. I was going to tear into the intake manifold and take out the reeds, but as a last thought I decided to check my air filter. So I removed my outerwear and ran it up the street and it ran perfect. So to make sure i wasnt imagining things i checked it again with the outerwear on and it misfired (or sounded like it) so I will be getting a new outerwear because my old one is worn out. :)

I hope you guys dont cast me out of the banshee hq for overlooking such a stupid thing like an air filter.

 is it just me or did nobody mention anything about jetting in the top end? lol dont blame yourself 'shee i did the same thing on my banshee when it was just a fouled plug!

well if you find that you definitly need a new coil and wires ,dont fuck around with a stock restrictive ignition ,get yourself a Nology race coil with Nology hot wires(140$ total) i jus t did this and the bitch noticably revs alot faste/higher r and comes right on the pipe off idle, youll love that mod for the money$ IMO

Outstanding!!!! :headbang: Something told me it wasn't your coil...

A lot of people don't take into consideration that if your air filter is dirty or restricted by a dirty outerwear, it will definitely affect the performance of your bike; especially on 2 strokes being that they are so "picky".

I'm really glad you found the problem, yours was nothing to be "embarrassed" about...there have been people who claimed they couldn't start their banshee and found out their problem was not turning the run switch to "run" or forgetting to turn the gas on. :rotflmao:

I've seen it first hand, except with different problems.

We were at St Anthonys as well, and one bike wouldnt run worth a shit. It would get to the powerband and stall and it was hard to start.

I mention to the owner of the bike "What does your air filter look like? Clean?"

"YEAH ITS CLEAN. I CLEANED IT 2 RIDES AGO." like I was insulting his mechanic skills.

That was my first clue.

I drop the clean air filter issue and we go to work disconnecting the TORS.

As I'm down there un plugging the little box while the owner was somewhere else....I decide to pull the seat off. The Outerwear was plugged with sand, leaves and mud.

I pull the outerwear off just as he comes walking back to "work" on the bike with me.

I told him to start it.

It started.

I told him to go run it.

He comes back "What did you do? Its like a brand new bike!"

I told him his air cleaner was too dirty. I hold up the outerwear and show him how its plugged.

I tell them then to run into Rexburg and grab some Simple Green so we can clean this plugged Outerwear and his now dirty aircleaner "I don't have that kind of money" is the answer I get. 20 minutes later he ran into town for more beer and cigarettes.

2 hours later the bike was parked on the trailer because the air cleaner without an outerwear had plugged so bad that it wouldn't even start.

Got to start at the simple stuff and work your way out.
