locogato11283 Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 i look at porting in this way. i do concrete work for a living. thats what i know and have grown up around. i am very good at my job. im a professional in my area. i am NOT a banshee engine builder. i dont claim to be nor do i know that much about the porting process so i leave porting to the porting professionals. if i were you, i would have a reputable builder work on your stuff... Animalman294 Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 I totally agree with the stickin' to what you know thing, but your friend may know how to rebuild any head you put in front of him. However, the reason these shops specialize in head porting is because they have (in most cases) been doing this for years and know how much material to remove from what part of the ports. Now I am not to familiar with what a port job entails with a two stroke Banshee motor, but I do know about porting a 302 ford mustang intake and heads. A friend of mine took his heads to his mechanic that built his racing motor, which he too said "hey I could do that". So, off to the builders he went and the heads came back with all this cool work done to them, and after the dyno test the heads only made about 5 hp more, which was pathetic. Well about a month later he thought he blew a head gasket. When the motor was tore down it was discovered that the cool port work had taken too much material from one of the inner walls and make the water jacket wall too thin and it ruptured. Moral to the story: the guy rebuilt engines and heads for a living, but not knowing how much material to take from what area (learned by years of experience) the heads were compromised. So, instead of it costing him $650 for the original port job, it cost him $1600 for new heads, and $550 for the new port job from a porting shop in LA, and Oh ya the original $650 for the port jobs on the old head. So it cost him more money to save money . Just my .02 ,but stick with a reputable port shop........... Quote
jinx44 Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 It takes a lot more than some carbide bits port 2-strokes. You need to redo the transfers also which requires a special tool. There is also a lot in port design. You can make good power porting your own stuff, but you have to know what you are doing to make optimum power. Quote
Ducman Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 Check out this site (Race Logic click here) I don't know if they make a stroker specific port template, but if they do your buddy could probably port your cylinders no problem. If I was going to do it myself, I would at least use a good template that has proven results. If they don't make a stroker template then I'd probably send the cylinders off to a builder. Give them a call, see what they have. Quote
