Doing my jets for the 1st time. My mods will be T-5's, TDR reeds and ported cages, pro flow filter set up w/o the lid, 4* timing key, .030 milled head, and lightened fly. The guy I ordered from says I need a 30 pilot, and 290 or 320 mains. I've talked to people with the same set up running 280's and a 27.5 pilot. when I asked if I should get a 27.5 just to be sure, he said "NO". I took his word for it because he is supposed to be an expert, but now am having second thoughts. I didn't really think there was an exact science to rejetting. I thought you pretty much just had to experiment with your machine to see what worked the best. Can he really be that good, or did he just want me to buy that $50 kit from him? Oh, he also said I couldn't use my stock needles. Anyone know why? Oh yeah, and I'm at about sea level and run 93 octane. Thanks!

He's full of shit...you can run the stock needles as well as run the stock pilots...You have it right, other can only suggest jetting to get you close. I've jetted some T5's and liked the stock pilots better along w/ the stock needles. those toomey needles don't work for shit that I've seen...Best way to find out is to play around yourself and find out what works best for you...

who's full of shit??? :D

Run the stock needles, not the "Toomey" needles, I hear problem after problem in jetting those. Stock pilot, and maybe 27.5s depending on what your machine likes, but above all, what I say, what he says, it's all "close guesses". You'll have to get the stuff in your carb, try it, and see if it likes it or not. Then read the plugs and listen to it, then go from there. Jetting is experimentation, period.

Banchetta knows his stuff, you follow his advice, and you'll be where you need to be.

Yeah I should have listened to Scott to begin with. I couldn't get in touch with the guys at carbparts.com and had to order my timing key from Vito's, so I figured I'd just go ahead and order it all at the same place. Thats what I get for rushing. I believe it was a K&N kit or either Vito's own kit-whichever one is $50. Anyone used either of these or should I just stay with my stock needles? What is my stock pilot size? I think he(Vito) told me 32.5, sound right?????????

I run T5's, 370 mains, Toomey 2:1 air filter, Toomey Needles, 30 pilots and Boyesen Carbon Fiber reeds at sea level at Glamis. My bike runs off the hook.

My saying.... "A lean bike will run good, just not for long."

I like my LRD needles that came with my pipes, real smooth on the bottom end.

My buddy has the same mods as you but runs a coolhead and doesnt have the flywheel and he was bogging bad down low and needed to go up on his pilot.

I ordered LRD needles and a 30 pilot for him and the quad woke up big time. I believe he is running a 290 or 300 main in the summer at like 900 feet.

Pilot is easy to swap out and might as well try it out to see if it wakes your shee up before it hits powerband some.

I've always heard that, but I've never had a 2-stroke motor that'll run better by running lean...A lean motor won't pull on top..I proved that to Chase 73. I changed my carbs over and raced him. He took me by 5 bike lengths consistently when I was taking him the week before, I then did a plug test to find no color.... I went up 4 sizes, and had no other larger jets at the time. I was still slightly lean,,raced him again and took him consistenly like I normally did..ordered some more jets, now he doesn't want any...pussy... :rotflmao:

Yeah, but most guys don't just race over and over. They think that since their bike is crisp and feels quick, that it is jetted perfect. Then boom, there goes the motor.
