sam97 Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 When I was doing my last wash down and clean up before putting the shee away for the winter and realized how messed up the bottom of it is. It is missing A LOT of paint and is starting to rust. I was wondering what you guys think it would take (time wise) to go down to the frame, have it powdercoated, and put it back together. I have had engines out of cars before, and don't think that I will have any major issues. The engine will be pulled whole, not tearing it down or anything. Also, what usually needs to be replaced when this is being done? Suspension bushings/ bearings? My small budget says that I need to think about all costs before starting, as I have to be able to ride like a month after I start the process. I will have a complete week off in March, and am trying to decide whether or not to do this. What do you guys think? Quote

XxMeltIcexX Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 You can tear the shee down in one day, and send ti down the next, take a week to do (roughly) and a few days to put it back together... And all those other thigns you see when its apart, you'll have a 3 week project if you have alot of free time to do it...Thats if you really clean all the parts and stuff, why would you get a frame pc'd and not clean everything, and polish a few things too!? Have fun! Im doing mine right now, but mines on a budjet, its been down for like 6 months, only cause my engine is fried.... Quote
DETROIT350 Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 Yeah the trick is trying not to add more stuff to your "well while i have it apart" list lol Quote
GYTWYPT Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 You can take it apart in half a day easy. Would just depend on how fast you could get it sandblasted and powder coated. Maybe a day to put it back together if you didnt know to much about it Quote
racer Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 at a casual, very casual pace, it has taken me 3 months to get it put back together. mostly because im entirely going through bearings and bushings and so on as i go. it kinda snowballed on me, but now all my pivots are clean and free moving. unlike before. the time my frame spent at the coater was only 4 days though. pretty nice turnaround i thought. . Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 tear it apart on a weekend, send it to the powdercoater, should hopefully have it back by the next weekend, and taking your time with it you should be able to put it back together in a weekend. Get yourself a can of PB blaster, it works wonders on saving bolts and breaking bolts loose. Things you'll want to get are swingarm bearings definitely. A-arm bearings (holyman), or a bushing kit for the a-arms Just go through now, and pull your wheels side to side, to see how the bearings are, pull up and down on the a-arms to see if there is play, etc etc. Look into getting chain sliders if needed, etc etc. Quote
sam97 Posted February 8, 2005 Author Report Posted February 8, 2005 Thanks to all, I think that I will be buying the bushings, swinger bearings, etc over the next few weeks, so that I won't have many unexpected costs while reassembling. What parts in particular do you guys recommend to have coated at the same time? I was thinking that I may get a better deal if I have the hubs and swing arm done too. Thanks again Quote
SANDSTAR Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 Man, if you have a job, plan on it taking a few(3-5) weekend all nighters. Your powder shop will determine how fast the build will go. A bad pc job will result in pc in threadded or spec'd areas that must be cleaned out before tou can put her back together. Make a list of these places that needs to be masked on your frame, and tell your coater that you want to be present when Jose tapes off the threads.Give yourself twice as much time as you think you will need, and make sure to to take her on a couple of shakedown rides before going on a big trip with a newly built bike. Stuff WILL work lose. Quote
ssanddemon Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 Dude, don't trust Jose' to mask the threads, just be smart and put bolts in the holes! Another thing is to take a grinder to any tabs on the frame you are not using, and MAKE SURE TO LOOK FOR CRACKS BEFORE YOU GET THE COATING DONE! I guarantee you will not be wanting to weld on the frame AFTER it's cherried out! Quote
BigRed350x Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 One of my bikes has been out of the game for about 4 months now because I am waiting to afford parts. It only took me about a day and a half to tear down to rolling chassis though. Make sure if you do tear it down that you keep track of parts. I can't count how many bolts & crap i lose every time and I have to order new ones. Quote
