initall Posted July 19, 2004 Report Posted July 19, 2004 I had the same problem lst week except i had to deal with both of them. Try getting a long sqaure shaped solid metal rod and a heavy hammer and put the edge of the rod into the grooves of the nut and hammer away. I did this and cut mine and they came off but i had to replace them. Do yours have the grooves? My new ones do not Quote
jinx44 Posted July 19, 2004 Report Posted July 19, 2004 I had one one time that took me (340lbs) with a 6 pipe cheater pipe on a 2' cresent (keeping the axle from turning) and my friend (390 lbs) with a 5' cheater pipe on a pipe wrench turning the nut, plus heating the nut until it was cherry red with a torch to finally break it loose. brock_fuzzy_69 Posted July 19, 2004 Report Posted July 19, 2004 a cut off wheel might be a good option as well cut the nut almsot through in 2 places then take it off Quote
sredish Posted July 20, 2004 Report Posted July 20, 2004 if it's the one I'm thinking of (the one that keeps it from sliding through the carrier) then it needs to be heated. it comes from the factory with thread locker. heat it up and it will give. also, an air hammer works wonders. Quote
rebelbanshee2 Posted July 20, 2004 Report Posted July 20, 2004 heat does alot. also try some good penatrating oil like pb blaster. soak it with it then hit it with a wrench or something to make it vibrate, then heat it up and give it all you got. this method always works for me Quote
dogboystoy Posted July 20, 2004 Report Posted July 20, 2004 Yes, heating it will work great, It will expand the nut. Just make sure you aim the flame at the nut. Otherwise you will expand the axle and the nut and wont get any further. Quote
Hockey390 Posted July 20, 2004 Report Posted July 20, 2004 isnt it amazing how it takes this much to get that damn thing off, but once you put it back on, it doesnt matter how tight you get it, that bitch wont stay put... Quote
banshee04le Posted July 20, 2004 Report Posted July 20, 2004 Use a Big ass pipe wrench. Yep. I've got a 3 footer that weighs about 20lbs. Heat would not be necessary. With the cheater pipe, I wouldn't even grunt. Quote
Cotton eyed Joe Posted July 20, 2004 Report Posted July 20, 2004 Use a Big ass pipe wrench. Yep. I've got a 3 footer that weighs about 20lbs. Heat would not be necessary. With the cheater pipe, I wouldn't even grunt. To tighten I use 2 pipe wrenches and just squeeze with both hands, and everything I have. That and some red loc tite and no problems getting them to stay on. Getting them off, I either use a really small rosebud on the oxy acetylene, or I lock the pipe wrench down and start tapping it with my 46oz ballast hammer. Eventually something gives, but its never been a real production to get it on or off. Quote
